ARTHUR U. NAZOR, 0F SHELBY, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 G. L. COOPER, OF SHELBY, OHIO.
BIT FOR HORSES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR U. NAZOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shelby, county of Richland, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bits for Horses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bit for horses and the object of the invention is to provide a bit by means of which the most vicious horse may be easily controlled but which is harmless to the horse.
The invention relates to the features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a front view of the bit, and Fig. 2 a side view showing the connections with the bridle and reins.
In this drawing, 1 indicates the mouth piece of the bit, having the side pieces 2 secured thereto and the plates 3 to which the straps are secured. As shown the mouth piece is formed of two parts 4 and 5, pivoted together centrally, as by means of a projection on one part having a groove therein and fitting in a socket in the other part, said other part having a projection engaging in the groove to hold the parts together. Projecting at an angle from the inner end of each part 4 and 5 is a lug 6 having a*ball or sphere 7 rotatably mounted on its free end.
As shown in F ig. 2 the bit is held in the horses mouth with the lugs directed rearwardly and the side pieces 2 projecting forwardly. 8 and 9 are portions of the bridle to which the plates 3 are connected. 10 is a ring to which the rein is connected and which is connected with the side plate by a rubber band or a spiral spring 11 and to the Specification of Letters Patent;

side piece by a strap 12, it being understood that the other rein is connected to the other side of the bit in a like manner.
The operation of the device is as follows: V hen the rein is pulled the rubber band 11 stretches until the strap 12 pulls on the side piece 2 which will rotate one of the parts of the mouth piece and throw up the lug thereon against the roof of the horses mouth, thus rendering the horse perfectly controllable instantly. The nose band 9 holds the bit against the upper jaw so that the knob or ball on the lug is held close to the roof of the mouth ready for action, and a slight pull on the lines will cause the knob to contact with the roof of the horses mouth in order to produce the effective operation of the device. As the lug is raised, the knob thereon will be caused to rotate as it moves up the side of the roof of the month, where it presses on certain nerves and renders the horse perfectly controllable.
A rope may be attached to the bit for leading or handling horses with the same effect as pulling on the lines.
I claim as my invention 1. A bit comprising a mouth piece formed of two portions swiveled together so as to have rotary movement, a lug on each portion, and a lever on the outer end of each portion projecting in an opposite direction from the lug and adapted to receive the rein.
2. A bit comprising a mouth piece formed of two parts connected together centrally by a swivel joint, a lug projecting from each part and a ball rotatably mounted on and inclosing the end of the lug.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR U. NAZOR.
