SKIPIE'ING ROPE.

This invention relates to an improved skipping rope used for exercising purposes, and more particularly to the mode of connecting the ends of the rope to the handle pieces. 7

One object of the invention is to provide a skipping rope with freely movable handles so that during the use of the device very little effort will be required to rotate the same.

A further object is to provide a device of the above nature which will be simple, cheap to manufacture, and very efficient and durable in use. I

The novel features. characteristic of my invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its constructionand mode of operation together with the objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood by reference to the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which v Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of one of the handles, showing the mode of attachment of one end of the rope in accordance with my invention.

According to the present invention, handle 1 is provided with a hollow 2 in its base 3, and secured within said hollow and at the edge of the base is a washer 4. This washer 4 may be made of wood or any other suitable material and is glued to the base within the hollow or otherwise securely fastened thereto. The washer is provided with a central circular hole 5 which receives one end of a rope 6 as shown in Figures 1 and 2.

It is very desirable that the rope have freedom of movement within the base of the handle in all directions, and furthermore the connection should be substantially permanant and durable. To prevent wear and, to reduce the frictional contact between the rope and the washer to a minimum, a metal sleeve or collar 7 is snugly fitted over and washer.

. In Figure 4 is shown a modified construction, wherein sleeve 11 is similar to 7 explained aboveexcept that the upper edge is not shapedor turned back upon itself, but remains straight. In addition'a wire ring 12 is clamped around rope 6 just above or in abutting relation to the upper edge of sleeve 11-. The outer diameter of this ring should overlap the outer diameter of the sleeve ,to provide a sufficient bearing surface for the ring on the washer 4.

A still further modification is disclosed in Figure 5, where the metal for forming the collar or sleeve 13 is made of heavy gauge. In this case one edge is turned outwardly to form a ledge or abutting surface 14. The body of the sleeve is punched out to form inwardly projecting prongs 15 for gripping the rope. Of course, it is understood that prongs, such as 15, may be provided in the sleeves or collars shown in Figures 2 and 4.

And it is further understood that both ends of the rope are provided with similar mechanism as fully explained above.

In a handle attachment ropes, in combination, a handle having a hollow portion, a rope-end arranged to be received within said hollow portion, airing of circular cross-section clamped to the ropeend, means provided with a central opening for allowing the rope-end to be disposed therethrough but retaining the ring within the hollow, said means being secured-to the handle and substantially closing the hollow port-ion, thereby effectively retaining the rope-end within the hollow, both the ring and the last-mentioned means forming in effect a swivelled joint, and rope-protecting means, clamped to the rope-end adjacent the ring, passing through said central opening to provide for free movement of said rope-end within the handle, and also to prevent wear of same. i l

In a handle attachment for skipping ropes, in combination, a handle having a hollow portion, a washer secured to the handle substantially closing the hollow portion, said washer being provided with a central opening, a rope-end arranged to be received within said hollow portion and extending through the central opening of the washer, and means including a ring of circular cross-section and a sleeve clamped to said rope-end, the former ro-tatably retaining the rope-end within the handle and the latter preventing wear thereof against the washer.
