JANTHONY T.'NORGAN, or PALO VALTO, rnNNsYInL/iNI'A.v
Letters Patent No.'97,797, dated December 14, 1869; antcdatcd December-7, 1869.
y :iM15'Rowen/Lern;I 1N .DEVICES FoRIAsTe-NING PISTONS To PIsToN-Ros.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patentand making part of the same.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it kuown that I, ANTHONY T. NORGAN, of Palo i Alto, in the countyof Schuylkill, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Mode of Fastening Pistons and Cross-Heads to Piston-Rods; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
. f clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had lto the accompanying drawings, and to the letters l of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is a view of piston-rod A, having the piston B iirmly secured, by the nut C, in its proper position, with a similar nut, D, at the other end, to secure the cross-head.`
Figure 2 is a view of piston-rod B, cut at red line,
`"to show the concave cone 2, corresponding to convex cone on nut O.
Figure 3 is an end view of the piston B. `Figure 4 is a View of nut O, complete. i Similar letters indicate coiresponding parts in the iigures. i
rlhe nature of my invention consists in devices for securing piston -rods to cross-heads `and pistons, iu i y a cheap and durable manner, and providing au easy method of replacing the same as required, as hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use. `my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.A
AI construct the piston-rod as shown at iig. 1, havp ing the threads at each end, also, with the shoulders 1 1, for the'piston and cross-heads to rest against; the piston B havin g the hole cored out large enough to allow thefend of the rod A to slip into, also having l the concave cone 2, figs. 2 and 3,`turned out true with as described.
the circumference ofthe piston; the nut C, iig. 4, being constructed with the convex cone to iit into the corresponding conical recess in piston B; the nut AC, with cone, being turned up perfectly true on the piston-rod A, adjusts the pistou B in its'proper position.
.The operation isias follows: 4 l The rod A, pistou B, and unt C being made as described, the rod is put into the piston, and the nut` put on and screwed up, the convex part ofthe nut goes into the concave part of the piston B, and combines the whole properly and solidly together..
The same inode secures the cross-head to the other end of the rod, and, by using two nuts at either end,
one reverse to the other, would allow the cross-head `or'piston to be adjusted to the exact length desired.
The advantages of this mode of constructing the pistons and piston-rod entirely dispenses with the turning and the fitting of the rod into pistons and cross-heads, as theholes in them are cored out larger than therod; also, dispensing with thekey-holes and keys, allowing the cross-heads and pistons to beeasily removed and others put ou, as may be required, by
breakage or other causes.
Having tlius fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is---,l
'lheA construction and arrangement of the piston'- x rod A with convex nut C and piston B, substantially A. T. NORGAN. Witnesses:
