Letters Patent No. 97,793, datedDcccmber 14, 1869.
IMPROVE!) WASHING-MACHINE.
1 The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making-part of the same.
To all whom it muy concern Be it known that I, Wimmer MORGAN, of Middlebrook, in the county of Augusta, und State of Virginia, have invented ce1-lain new and usefullrnprovos monts in Taming-Machines, of which Jthe following is a full, clear, and cxactdcscription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make partof this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspcciii'e View of the machine;
Figui-e2, a horizontal section ot the same atti-ie lille a: :c ol'lig. l; and i Figure 3, aplan view of the support for thtl tub and of the handle l'or oscillating.; it. v i
My invention relates to that class of machines with which an oscillating-tub is used.
In the accompanying drawings, thc frame A. A is shown as made of a rectangular forni.
The upper parts of two uprighi's, '1% il, mounted on this l'rainc, are connected by the cross-bars O (l, which also l'orm guides for thc slide-bars I) I), and the lower parts of these uprights are connected by the cross-bar C', which also forms a support for the axle o1" the oscillator E, upon which the tub F rests, and with which it turns.
The slide-bars D I) are connected at their upper ends by across-piece, G, which also l'orms a bearing for the lever H, and at their lower ends by a crosspecc, G', to which is attached :i rubber, I.
A; lever, H, vibratcs vcrticallyon a pivot, h, on one of the uprights B.
A stud, It', attached to this lever, bears upon the upper side oi' the cross-'piece Gr.
lhe tub I has a corrugated bottom, f, and is also `provided with guide-pieces, f j", which overlap the oscillator Il), and thus hold the tub in place.
rlhc oscillator consists of a pzuldle-shapcd lever, E, having a cylindrical base, c, an axle, c', and :i stop, c", against which the tub rests.
The rubber I is composed of beaded rounds, which are attached to the cross-piece G', and may be either parallel to each other or radial to the axis of rotation of' the tub. Y
The operation of the machine is as follows:
The cross-pieces G G', with the slide-bars D and rubber I, are first raised by hand7 or by means of a suitable lever attached to one of the uprights, and may be supported by pins or otherwise while the tub is placed in position upon the oscillator, the supports may then be withdrawn, and the rubber descends and l rests upon the material in the tub to be \vashed,`and may be caused to press with any dcgree-of force by means of the lever H.
Motion is then communicated to the tub by means of the oscillator lever, and the materia-l in the tub is subjected to a rubbing action between the beaded rounds of the rubber and the corrugated bottoni ot the tub, closely reselnblinT that of theknuckles upon the ordinary corrugated `wash-lnuird.
The guide-pieces j" hold the tub firmly/'when turning, butare so constructed as to permit the tub to be lii'tcd out of its place when necessary.
4What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Lcttersflatent, is-
l. The combination of the depressing level", the sliding frame, the rubber, the tub, and the oscillator, all constructed to operate as set forth.
2. The combination of the tub with thc oscillator, constructed and operating as herein described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed JOHN S McColntLn, ROBERT M. Fin'rn.
