WINDOW-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY M. CRAWFORD, av citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window fasteners and has for its object the production of a window fastener which is adapted to lock the two sashes together when in closed position or to lock them together when moved slightly relative to each other so that the windows may be opened either at the bottom or at the top a sufficient distance to ventilate the room and still prevent any person from entering or reaching through the opening and unlocking the fastening mem bers which secure the two sashes together.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims hereinafter given.
Of the drawings: Figure 1 represents a section through a portion of an upper sash showing in plan a portion of the lower sash and the fastening members secured to said sashes, and Fig. 2 represents an elevation of the same with the sashes moved relative to each other and locked together.
Similar characters designate like parts throughout the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 represents a portion of the upper member of the lower sash and to the upper face of this member is secured a support 11 by means of the screws 12. Projecting from the upper face of this support is a headed guide member or stud 13, the shank of which passes through a slot 14 in a sliding bolt 15. To the upper face of the lower member 16 of the upper sash is secured a socket member 17 by means of screws-18. This socket member is provided with a slot 19 extending upwardly through one side wall thereof and partially across the upper wall thereof, as indicated plainly in Figs. 1 and 2. Extending through this slot 19 is a shank 20 of a bar 21, the opposite end of the shank 20 being provided with a head 22 which prevents the-disengagement of the bar 21 from the socket member 17. I of which the bolt 15 is adapted to engage when the bar 21 is in raised vertical position, as indicated in Fig. 2.
It is obvious that the sashes 10 and 16 may be moved relative to each other a short distance and the bolt 15 moved upon the guide member 13 so that one end thereof will pass through an opening 23 and lock the two sashes together so that further movement relative to each other is prevented. lVhen this has been accomplished the sashes will be effectively locked together so that they may be moved to the upper part of the window frame leaving an opening at the bottom for the admission of the fresh air or moved to the bottom of the window frame leaving an opening at the top for the exit of the dead air from the room.
A yielding member such as a spring 24 is secured to the support 11 and normally extends upwardly into the path of the bolt 15 so as to prevent movement thereof, when in engagement with the socket member 17 to lock the window sashes together when the window is closed or in engagement with one of the openings 23 when the window is partially opened. \Vhen it is desired to unlock the window the operator presses down the yielding member 24 and moves the locking bolt along the guide member 13 until the bolt has been wholly removed from the socket member 17 or the opening 23. When the bolt 15 has been withdrawn from the socket member 17 it is moved about the vertical flanged projection 13 into a position at right angles to its locking position and while in this position the side wall of the yielding abutment 24: will contact with the side wall of the bolt and prevent its accidental displacement by turning around the projection 13. By this means the ends of the bolt when disengaged from the socket can never rotrude beyond the window sash 10 and thereby become injured or cause an injury to any of the other members forming a part of the window sashes or the locking mechanisms therefor.
One flange of the socket member 17 is pro vided with a lug 25 which positions the bar 21 when not in use and prevents it from accidentally moving into the plane of movement of the lower sash 10. Normally the bar 21 rests upon the lower member of the upper sash frame, as indicated in Fig. 1, and when in this position the head 22 of the 2 mass;
shank 20 is in the position shown in said from said socket thereby preventing its accifigure and in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position the locking bolt 15 is free to move into the socket 17 as shown in Fig. 1, and when thus positioned one side wall of the locking bolt en 'ages with the outer face of the head 22 and prevents any displacement of said bar 21.
The bar 21 is cut away as at 26 on an angle to the shank 20 so that when the bolt 15 has been removed from the socket 17 the bar may be turned into a position at right angles to its position shown in Fig. 1, and then moved along the slot 19 until it assumes the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position it is adapted to receive into one of the openings 23 the end of the bolt 15, as heretofore described.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the foregoing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a socket secured to one sash; of a pivot secured to the other sash, a bolt slidably mounted on said pivot and adapted to be moved into a position at right angles to itslooking position; and a yielding abutment adapted to engage the end of said bolt when positioned within said socket and the side of said bolt when withdrawn from said socket and thereby prevent its accidental displacement.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a support secured to one window sash and provided with a flanged member; a locking bolt provided with a slot through which said flanged member extends; a socket secured to the other sash and adapted to receive the end of said locking bolt; and yielding means for retainin said bolt in locking position and adapted to co-act with the side of said bolt when withdrawn dental displacement.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a socket secured to one sash; of a support secured to the other sash and provided with a vertical projection; a bolt thereon having both a pivotal and slidable movement about said projection; and means for positively retaining said bolt in both its locking or inoperative position and preventing its accidental displacement.
4:. In a device of the class described, the combination of a socket secured to one sash; of a support secured to the other sash; a vertical project-ion thereon, a bolt thereon having both a pivotal and slidable movement about said projection; and a flat spring eX- tending transversely of said support, one
side of which is adapted to engage the end of said bolt when inserted in said socket and prevent its accidental displacement.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a socket secured to one sash; of a support secured to the other sash and provided with a transverse depression in its upper face; a bolt secured to the upper face of said support and slidable thereon transversely of said depression and adapted to be turned into a position at right angles to its locking position; and a fiat spring secured in said depression and normally extending above the upper face of said support in position to engage the end of said bolt and prevent its withdrawal from said socket when in looking position and to engage with the side face of said bolt when Withdrawn from said socket and turned into a position parallel to said flat spring.
