IMPRovED MAcIINE Foucart/:PING AND FORMING THE :ERoN'I's or BooTs.
.The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.`A
Be it known that l, CHRISTOPHER DAY, of Mineral Point, in the county of Iowa,'in the State of Wisconsin, have invented a new-and improved Machine for Crimping and l o`rming `the lronts of' Boots; and, I do4 hereby declare that the` following is a full and exact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accompallying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon. i
Thenature of my'iuventionconsists in a machine, in duplicate, for the purpose of crimping and forming the fronts of hoot-s; and I hereby proceed to describe its construction, reference being had to the machine as singlconly'. p "he ,iframe 11 l?, with upright centre-pieces c o, ratchet-beam B, with lever L attached, ratchet-bar It, connected with gate g, which gate works upon rollerguidcs, and is actuated by means' of the lever L, ratchet-beam B, and ratchet-bar 1t'.
Immediately beneath and in the gate g, is a groove,
l for the purpose of receiving the crimp-board, Figure 2, which crimp-board is secured in the groove of the gate by means of screws s s or springs placed within the groove. v
l1nmediatclyiheneath"the gate g is fixed astanchion, o, in two sections, (adjustable .by screw N,) with con-A vex surface.
The upper portion of the `stanchion-sections,-and around the convex margin, are prepared interspaces, which are closed by means of pinion-teeth upon the supplemental jaws K K, which jaws work upon hinges, and are adjusted Vor loosed by means of screws T T.
The utility of the marginal interspaces in the sections of the stauchions, is to allow theinsertion 'ofi clasps, to `be placed upon the crimp-board when forced hctweenthe sections of the stanchion, thereby securing the leather thereto, while it is being removed The pinion-teeth of the supplemental jaws K K are for the purpose of iilling the interspaces in` the sections of the stanchion, to afford an even and smooth surface to the convex portion of the stanchion while the machine is operating.
attached to the upper portion of the gate g, in con-- nection with ratchet-beam B and lever L, attached to ratchet-beam; the stanchion o, in two sections, resting in frame immediately beneath the gate, and havingy convex surface, correspondingvwith the coucavity ot" the crimp-board, tig. 2.
The tivo sections of the stanchion o areadj usted by means of. screw and nut N.
Two supplemental jaws, K K, are fixed, one to each .section ofthe stanchion, and working upon hinges,
and containing pinion-teeth fitting into interspaces of the sections of the stanchion.
The leather, or front of the boot, is placed upon the convex ysurface ofthe stanchion o, the lever'L brought down, which brings the crimp-board,7 g. 2, in contact with'the leather, and forces it between the two sections of the stanchion o, and fixes it iirmly upon the crimp-board, g. 2, (now in the 'groove of the gate g.) The snpplenuiental jaws K K are then lo'osed, by means of screws T T, and dropped down, revealing the interspaces inthe sections ot' the stanchion, and in which are placed clasps for the purpose of securing the leather upon the crimp-board, prior to removing it from the machine.
What l claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The new and improved method of forming and crimpingthe fronts of boots, by means of the ratchetbeam B and' ratchet-bars 1t 1t, in. combination with the gates'g g, stanchions o o, and toot-lied jaws K K, and the adjustment of the stanchion-sections and jaws K K, by means of screws N and'T T, constructed and arranged as herein described.
CHRISTOPHER DAY.
