To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIEL R. FUCHS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Securers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of door-securing devices -wherein a brace-bar is disposed diagonally between abutments on the door and floor respectively, and wherein are provided key-actuated means through the agency of which locking engagement between the door abutment and the upper end of the bar can be readily effected.
The object of my invention is to provide in a door-securer of the class mentioned, a simple and efficient construction and organization of mechanism whereby the door is braced and secured against forcible entry at points adjacent t-he respective door jambs; and to this end my invention, as generally stated, comprises a plurality of brace bars and complementary abutments therefor arranged adjacent the respective vertical edges of the door, in combination with means for effecting relative movement between the said bars and their correlated abutments on the door, whereby eflicient locking engagement of the said bars and abutments can be simultaneously accomplished and the door thus be effectually braced from the interior to counteract pressure or force applied exteriorly thereto, at either edge thereof; and whereby, further, the respective bars and door abutments can be simultaneously disengaged from each other, to permit the unlocking and opening of the door, all of which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is an interior elevation of a door equipped with securing devices embodying an efficient form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof, as on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same, as on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4C is an elevation of the toothed ends of the oppositely-movable locking bolts and the co-acting key-controlled pinion for actuating the same, the supporting and covering casing being shown with its cap plate removed. Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross section, as on the line 5 5 of Fig. L1, the cap-plate for the casing being in place. Fig. 6 is a transverse vertical section, as on the line 6 6 of Fig. 5. 12, 12 designate two substantial bars adapted to be diagonally disposed between abutments 13, 13 and 14, 14, on the floor and door respectively, in a manner to act upon and resist the forcible opening of the door at or near the respective vertical edges The floor abutments preferably comprise sockets let into recesses in the floor, and the door abutments preferably comprise overhanging ledges of two suitably-disposed fixtures 15 upon the inner side of the door. Each of these fixtures in the form illustrated is an integral structure or casting including, in
the main, a back 16; a top 17, and a bottom 1S, the top being provided for a portion of its length with the forwardlyextending ledge 14 which constitutes the abutment proper for the upper end of the adjacent v brace-bar, and the top and bottom being connected at their respective ends by front portions 19.
The fixture constitutes a horizontal support and guide device for one end of a sliding bolt-like member 20 which extends transversely of the door, and which member, by its longitudinal movement, may be shot into or from a recess or keeper 21 conveniently provided in the door jamb in proximity to the fixture. On the outer side `of 'the portion of the bolt, as it may be termed, within the casing, is a forwardly-projecting guide comprising a loop 22, through which freely extends the upper end of the brace-bar,
whereby, when the bolt is actuated, said bar is bodily moved either under or away from the adjacent abutment ledge as desired; that is to say, when the bolt is shot into engagement with the keeper the upper end of the brace-bar is bodily carried beneath and into locking engagement with the ledge, and when the bolt is reversely moved to disenga ge it from the keeper the upper end of the brace bar is carried beyond the free end of the ledge to release it therefrom. In the former case the ledge affords a substantial abutment for the upper end of the bar and thus insures the effective locking of the door against forcible entry, and in the other case the upper end of the bar, being free and unrestrained and capable of vertical movement in the guide loop, permits the door to be swung open. The front portions 19 of the fixture serve as determinate stops for the guide loop 22 to limit the throw of the bolt in each direction. 1 preferably provide the abutment ledge 14 with a depending tiange or lip 23 which extends forwardly of the upper end of the brace bar and serves to maintain it in place beneath the ledge.
The two fixtures 15, aside from their reversed condition, are identical in construction. The two bolts extend horizontally therefrom toward the middle of the door and thereat enter and are guided and supported in a casing Q4 aflixed to the door. One of the bolts is in a higher plane than the other, as indicated, and their overlapping inner edges are provided with rack teeth 25 in mesh with an interposed pinion 26 within the casing. This pinion is preferably carried by an arbor 27 on the barrel of an ordinary key-lock 28, as, for example, the Yale type. The loclt is leti into an aperture 29 in the door as usual, and itis operative by means of a suitable key from the exterior of the door, whereby when the loel: barrel is turned in one direction the pinion is rotated in a manner to throw the gear racks, and perforce the bolts, in opposite directions to each other, and thereby withdraw the bolts simultaneously from the respective keepers 21, and at the same time bodily shiftthe upper ends of the brace bars from locking engagement with the respective abutments, and whereby when the lock barrel is turned reversely, the said bolts and their connections are caused to assume their previous interlocking positions. Thus it will be seen that by a single or common key-controlled lock, the two bolts and the two brace bars are simultaneously operated, either to secure or to release the door at its respective vertical edges, as desired. Instead of separate and independent abutment members being employed for the upper ends of the respective brace-bars, the bolts themselves may perform the function of abutments, as illustrated in Figs. 10 and 11. ln this modified structure the upper ends of the brace-bars are guided in loops 22 which are attixed directly to the door beneath the path of the bolts, and the bolts are supported and guided in fixtures 15a to pass directly above the bars 12 when the bolts are shot into engagement with the keepers, and beyond and clear of the said bars when the bolts are retracted to unlock the door.
My invention may be modified in other respects without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence 1 do not wish to limit armer myself to the specic details of construction herein shown and described.

1. Door-securing means comprising a plurality of inclined brace bars, tloor and door abutments for the respective ends of the bars, means for supporting the door abutments adjacent the respective vertical edges of a door, a common operating meanslocated on the door between the said supporting means, and connections controlled b v said operating means for effecting relative movenient between the upper ends of the bars and their proximate door abutments, whereby the said bars and door abutments can be simultaneously moved into or out of locking engagement with each other.
