DOOR APPLICABLE FOR CLOSING TI-IE OPENINGS .OR "WAYS PARTITIONS, WALLS, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed June 25,-
Y '0 all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, OnsINr STUART, a subect of the King of Great Britain, residing,
' at Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster and Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Doors Ap; plicable for Closing the Openings or lVays Through Bulkheads, Partitions, lValls, and the like, of which the following is a specification. v I
- This invention has reference to doors applicable for smoke boxes and for closing the openings or ways through bulkheads, partitions, walls and the like where it is desired to make a practicallyfiuid tight or fireproof door which can be readily opened and closed.
As above stated the invention may be applied as'a fluid tight or fireproof door for various purposes, but for convenience it will be described as a rectangular door hinged at one side.
The invention will be understood from the following description reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the door, closed but not fastened; I
Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line A, B.
Fig.3 is a vertical section on the line C, D, of Fig. 1 r y Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the door, closed and fastened; I
Fig. 5 is a cross section on the line .13, F,
I of Fig. l;
Fig. 6 is a vertical section on the line Gr, H, of Fig. 4. Y
Referring to the drawings, the door con sists of a plate 1 which is hinged by hinges such as 2 to the partition 3 adjacent to the way oropening 4 over which the door 1 is v adapted to fit when closed, and to theouter face of this plate is applied a marginal frame 5 composed of parallel side members spaced apart and top and bottom members also spaced apart so as to form a margin all around the face ofthe door plate 1, the space between the said side and top and. bottom members beingileft open so asto ex pose the said door plate The edge 5" of this marginal frame 5 opposite to that of the hinges 2 is coincident (when the door is in the unfastened position) with the corre sponding edge of the door 1 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, while the other side edge is spaced away from the hinges as t Specification of Letters Patent.

leave a clearance to allow the door to open.
The upper and lower edges of the marginal frame 5 are coincldent wlth the upper'and lower edges of the door plate 1 as also shown in the said figures. This marginal frame 5 is adapted to have a limited sliding movement along the face of the door plate 1 in the directlon of the arrow J, and 1n the reverse direction as shown by arrow K, and is prevented from becoming separated therefrom. A convenient means forpreventing such separation is to'provide a bar 6 (or bars) extending between the top and bottom members of the marginal frame 5 and rigidly secured to the door plate 1 as by rivets 7, the ends of such bar being off set at 8- (Fig. 3) or so formed as to overlap the inner edge of the marginal frame 5 and thus prevent the marginal frame5 coming away from the door plate 1 while allowing for a sliding movement independent of the door plate. A supplementary bar 9 is also provided which is permanently fixed at the ends to the marginal frame 5, and acts to strengthen thesaid frame and serve as a guide against the face of the door plate 1.
The marginal frame 5 1s provided with catches or fingers lOs'paced apartalong the top and bottom edges thereof, and project.
ing beyond the top and bottom edges of'the door plate 1, and the side edge 5 of the said marginal frame forms a catch portion which while lying coincidentwith the corresponding edge of the door plate 1 as aforesaidwhen the door isin the unfastened po-.
sition'(Figs. 1, 2 and is projected beyond the same when the marginal frame is slid 1n the direction of the arrow J. The catches or projections 5 may be chamfered on their outer face lfClGSlIQCl as shown 1n Fig; 2 and the catches 10 may be chamfered on their outer face as shown in Fig. 5.
' The limited sliding movementis imparted to the marginal frame 5 bymeans of a cam 1.1 mounted on a-spindle 12'projecting from the face ofthe door plate 1, the said cam working between abutments on the marginal frame 5, as for instance between one side 7 member of such frame and the supplementary bar9,the cam being worked by asuitable handle 13. Any other suitable mechanism for sliding the marginal frame 5 may however be used. Side play of the marginal frame 5 is prevented by the bar 6 that is rigid y secured to the door plate 1, also if desired by guide pins 14: projecting from the face of the door plate 1 and against which the inner edges of the marginal frame abuts.
Along each edge of the way or opening 4 over which the door is adapted to fit when closed (except at the edge adjacent to the hinges) there is a frame or bar 15 rigidly fixed in position, such frame or bar comprising or containing a plurality of holding parts or latches 16 beneath or under which the said catch portions 5 and of the marginal frame are adapted to slide, and by means of which the door is pressed toward the surface 3 around the opening t in connection with which it fits. That is to say such frame has at the top and bottom a series of holding parts or latches 16 with spaces or gaps 17 at intervals, located opposite the catches 10 of the marginal frame when the door is in the unfastened position (Fig. 1) while such frame has at the side a holding part 16 (without the gaps 17) extending from top to bottom of the door for the catches 5 to engage in.
To close the door it is turned on its hinges 2 and pressed against the surface 3 which it fits, such surface being provided with rubber, leather or other suitable packing if desired, the gaps 17 at'top and bottom allowing the catches 10 to pass between as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The earn 11 is now turned so as to cause the top and bot tom catches 10 to slide in the direction of the arrow J under the holding parts 16 of the top and bottom members of the rigid bar or frame 15, and the side catch member 5 to slide into the holding part 16 of the side member of the said rigid bar or frame 15 as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and G. The catches if made chamfered or wedge-shape as shown insure-the door being pressed with force or jammed against the surface 3 upon which it fits, thus producing a fluid tight or fire proof joint. To release the door the cam 11 is operated to slide the marginal frame-5 in the reverse direction shown by the arrow K, and the door can then be opened on its hinges 2. I
The invention is susceptible of application'to awide variety of ,doors. For exlock with or overlap'one another.
ample the door might be made of two folding doors the meeting edges of which inter- In such case the top and bottom of .the doors are locked by the catches 10 as iereinbefore described, and the catch members 5 at the meeting edges of the respective doors ar arranged to slide over one anotherso as to form a tight or interlocking joint,.the opposing wedge shaped surfaces thereof insuring that a fluid tight joint is obtained at the place where the one catch member 5* overlaps the other catch member 5*.
This construction forms the subject matter' of my divisional application, Ser; No. 371.,13, filed April 5, 1920 and hence its details are not specifically claimed herein.
I declare that what I claim is 1. The combination of a door frame, a door hinged thereto and adapted to seat thereagainst, a set of keepers one of which is substantially coextensive with that edge of the door opposite its hinges,;and a wet ing member having a continuous edge substantially coextensive with the edge of-the door opposite its hinges, arranged so that the wedging member engages the keeper along substantially its entire length.
2. The combination of adoor frame, a door hinged thereto and adapted to seat thereagainst; a continuous keeper supported by said frame adjacent to and substantially equal in length with the edge of the door opposite to the hinges; keepers adjacent the other free edges of said door and mounted on said frame; and a locking member slidable on theface of said door from' and toward the hinged edge thereof, said member having a continuous beveledv locking edge adapted to enter the undercut of saidgcontinuous keeper, and beveled lugs adapted simultaneously to engage the other keepers.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name this 5th day of June .1918, in the presence of two subscribing. witnesses.
ORSINI STUART.
