FASTENER FOR BULKHEAD-DOORS. V
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1921.
Original application filed 11111525, 1918, serial No. 241,903. Divided and this application filed A rils,
' 1920. Serial No. 371,543. I a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORSINI STUART, subject of the Kingof Great Britain, residing at Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster and Kingdom of England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fasteners for Bulkhead-Doors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to doors applicable for smoke boxes andfor closing the openings or ways through bulkheads, partitions, walls and the like where it is desired to make a practically fluid tight or fireproof door which can be readily opened and closed.
In my specification Serial No. 241903 filed June 25, 1918, of which this application is a division I have described my invention as applied to a fluid tight door for various purposes-hinged at one side. My present improvement has reference to a double door, that is to say a door which is made of two folding doors, the meeting edges of which overlap one another.
In the accompanying drawing- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my double door with my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 Fig. 1.
Referring to these figures, two doors are used 1 and 1 connected by hinges to the partition 3 on. opposite sides of the doorway 4:. The doors 1 and 1 seal against the margin of the doorway and 1 carries an over-lapping flange 1. Each door carries a sliding frame, 5 and 5 guided on the retaining members on lugs 6? and 6 Each frame carries at its end projecting beveled lugslO and 10 These engage under an over-hanging lug-bar or. keeper 15 cut away at 17 to permitthe entrance of the lugs 10 and 10*. Each of the frames 5 and 5* has is a section on the line 3-3 of indicated by the numeral 5 and that on the frame 5 being indicated by the numeral 5".
The flange 5 engages the over-lapping flange 1 on the door 1 and seals this flange tightly against the door. Thebeveled flange 5 reinforces the action of the flange 5 to produce a tight joint at the abutting edges of the door. The edge 5 is in effect a keeper for the looking edge 5 of the other frame. The frames 5* and 5 are operated by cam 11 which may be rotated byhandles 13, which in this case close the doors, the door 1 is first turned on i 7 its hinges and pressed against the surface against which it fits, the cut away parts 17 allowing the lugs 10* to pass. The other door 1 is next turned on its hinges and pressed against the surface against which it fits, the cut away parts 17 allowing the lugs 10 topass, and its overlapping flange 1 abuts against the edge of the door 1. The abutting surfaces of the door or the partition obviously may be provided with rubber, leather or other suitable packing if desired. The cams 11 are now turned so as to cause the top and bottom lugs '10 and 10 to slide under the keepers 15, and also cause the beveled flange 5 to reinforce the action of the flange 5 to produce a tight joint at the abutting edges of the door. To release the door, the cams 11 are operated to slide the frames 5*, 5 in the reverse direction and the doors can then be opened on their hinges.
I declare that what I claim is 1. The combination of a door frame, a
pair of doorshinged at opposite sides-of the said frame and adapted to seat thereagainst, one of the said doors having a portion overlapping the other door when they are closed, keepers mounted upon the said frame adjacent the free edges of said doors, and looking members, one mounted on the face of each door to slide from and toward the hinged edge thereof, each of the locking members having beveled lugs adapted to en gage said keepers, the locking member on the overlapped door having a beveled bar coextensive with and wedging against the overlapping portion of the overlapping door, and the locking member on the overlapping door having a beveled portion adapted to engage the overlapped door.
2. The combination of a door frame, a pair of doors hinged at opposite sides of the said frame and adapted to seat thereagainst, one
of the said doors having a portion overlapping the other door when they are closed, a
sliding locking frame applied to the face of each doorso that the space inclosed by each is left open to expose the door behind, guides rigidly secured to the respective doors and whose ends overlap two'opposite edges of the locking frames and prevent separation of the latter from the doors, but allow them to have a sliding movement, projecting lugs along two opposite edges of each locking to tWo opposite sides of the door-way open-- ing, to receive the projecting lugs when the door 1s closed, and means for sliding the locking frames on the faces of the door plates so that their lugs Will engage beneath the counter Wedge faces of the keepers, and the counter Wedge flange portions will Wedge themselves together in order to press the door tightly upon the surface against which it fits.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name this 20th day of March, 1920, in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
ORSINI STUART.
