CARRIER FOR PNEUMATIG-DESPATCH-TUBE APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MnR'roN L. EMERSON, of Braintree, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carriers for Pneumatic-Despatch-Tube Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in carriers for pneumatic despatch tube apparatus and especially to packing rings for such carriers.
The figure shows a side elevation of part of a carrier with my improved packing.
In usual practice with pneumatic tubes, the carrier on being inserted into the tube immediately turns to the same position, and the wear on the rings is, therefore, always at the same point. This fact is caused by the impossibility of building the carrier so that its center of gravity lies in the main axis; this being the case, the carrier turns about its main axis until the center of gravity is in the lowest possible position. The result is that the carrier always slides on the same surface, and the wear is therefore wholly at this point and the life of the packing ring is greatly lessened.
The carrier A has a packing ring r consisting of two strips B and C made of canvas, felt or other material and between said strips is placed the ring D made of harder material, in this instance of cast steel. The function of this ring is to take the sliding wear of the carrier and to prevent the softer packing strips on each side from wearing eccentric and thus losing their packing Specification of Letters Patent.

The function of the softer packing is to pack the carrier, to take the blow off the carrier in passing around. bends, over rough joints etc. and thus through its elasticity protecting the carrier and tubing from injury; to prevent the metal noise from impact which all carriers with steel packing rings make in passing around bends; and also to save weight. It is obvious that this ring may be made up in various ways, and the main point being that it shall consist of a strip or strips of material of different hardnesses. The function of the harder material is to take the wear, and of the softer material to take the shock.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A packing ring for pneumatic despatch tube carriers consisting of strips of material of different degrees of hardness with the strip of greater hardness and of the same diameter located between the strips of less hardness, said strips being arranged and proportioned so that the strip of greater hardness will contact with the tube as well as the strips of less hardness during the passage of the carrier through the tube.
