:INITED STATE$ JAMES BROWN, OF FONDA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT lN MlLLSTONE-BUSHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 118,101, dated August 15, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BROWN, of Fonda, in the county of Montgomery and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Millstone-Bush and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which the figure is a vertical section through the spindle.
My invention consists in an improvement upon millstone-bushes, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A represents the sides of the casing, made to gradually increase in thickness inwardly from top to bottom. B are a series of blocks, each of which has two of its longitudinal faces in contact with the inner surface of the case, and which are made to slope gradually and increasingly outward as they approach the top of the case. These blocks have recesses b b to allow the long bolts 0 C to pass therethrough and bind the top and bottom to the body of the case. They have also central recesses 11 b b b, which, when united, form a circular aperture for the spindle D. The fol lowers are somewhat shorter than the casing, to
allow for their downward movement, as they become worn by friction from the spindle. E are four gaugescrews, passing through the bottom of the casing.
The mode of operation is as follows: The spindle being surrounded by these blocks to form a bearing therefor, the blocks themselves will close around it, and as their central and inner surfaces are worn will automatically take up their own wear as fast as it occurs. If, however, the blocks are at any time found to bind with too much friction upon the spindle, their degree of pressure is gauged and regulated by the screws E.
Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understanding of my invention, what I esteem to be new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is'
The arrangement of beveled blocks B loosely in relation both to the beveled sides of case A and to gauge-screws E, as and for the purpose specified.
JAMES BROWN.
