Be it known that I, GUY J. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cyanide, in the county of Lawrence and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulverizers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvementin pulverizers employing a plurality of cii'ushing rolls and more particularly to that class of pulverizers adapted to grinding and pulverizing stone and ore, and has for its object the provision of a machine capable of subjecting the substance being crushed to grinding actions of different degrees in one operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide a new and improved means for adjusting one of the crushing rolls both vertically and laterally with respect to the other rolls.
A further object is to provide novel means for permitting one of the rolls to yield slightly away from the other rolls when any matter should become jammed therebetween which it would be impossible to crush, thus saving the machine from being wrecked.
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation view of the machine partly in section. Fig. 2 is an end view of the machine. Fig. 3 is a detail view of mechanism for adjusting one of the rolls. Fig. 4 is vertical sectional view taken on line 1-1 Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 Fig. 3.
In a suitable frame 1 inclosed by housing 2 are mounted crushing rolls 3, 4 and 5, the roll 4 vertically beneath roll 3 and roll 5 a little to one side of and approximately between the other two rolls. These rolls are formed of substantially cone shaped members 6 and 7 adapted to seat upon the bev eled inner faces 9, 10 of the shell 8, so that when the two members 6 and 7 are drawn together a substantially solid roll will be formed. The upper and lower rolls 3 and 4 are keyed respectively to shafts 11 and 12 which shafts in turn are mounted. in bear ings 13 and 14. scribed. Each of the shafts 11 and 12 have mounted thereon the belt wheels 16 adapted to be driven by a suitable source of power not shown. Adjacent the wheels 16 are gear wheels 17 meshing with gear wheels 18 mounted on either extremity of the shaft 19 which carries the intermediate roll 5.
Means are provided for laterally shifting the upper and lower rolls 3 and 4 with respect to each other to insure an even wearing of all parts of the crushing surfaces thereof. This means consists of an internally screw threaded sleeve 21 having a shoulder 22 and an externally screw threaded portion 23 which sleeve is ada oted to screw on the threaded portions 15 o the bearings 13. A cap 24 when screwed upon the sleeve 21 bears against the collar 25 mounted on the ends of the shafts carrying the upper and lower rollers. Preferably washers 26 and 27 are provided at opposite sides of the collar 25. It will thus be seen that the screwing of the sleeve 21 and cap 24 to the right or left will result in a corresponding movement of the rolls 3 and 4.
The bearings 20 of the shaft 19 are slidably mounted in standards 28 which in turn rest upon substantially wedge shaped blocks 29 and 30 connected by dovetail and groove connections 31. Mounted in the bifurcated arm 32 of the lower block 30 is a threaded pin 33 having one end fast to the upper block 29 and carrying the gear 34 meshing with the worm gear 35 on the inner end of crank 36 by means of which the block 29 may be moved in either direction and the roll 5 correspondingly raised or lowered. The roll 5 is also provided with means for shifting said roll toward or away from the other rolls consisting of the rod 37 having one end fixed to the standards 28 and the other end thereof slidably mounted in the suppcrt 38 secured to the frame 1. The outer end of the rod 37 is screw threaded to receive the nut 39 and interposed between said nut and the support 38 is a tension spring 40, the said spring permitting of a slight movement of the roll after the same has been adjusted.
