UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS CAMPBELL HAMEY, OF NORTH SYDNEY, NEW SOUTH WALES, AUSTRALIA.
MILLING yAND/OR GRINDING MACHINE.
Application filed March 24, 1927, Serial No. 178,044, and in Australia July 15, 1926.
This invention relates to iinprovements in milling and /or grinding machines of the type in which a vertical reciprocating motion employed to crush the material, and a revolvable surface to grind it against a lower fixed surface.
The object of the invention is to provide improved means whereby increaseil downward pressure is imparted to the muller and to means whereby the reciprocating motion for crushing is ellected with greater accuracy, less vibration and less wear than heretofore.
According to the invention a flywheel. is mounted at or adjacent the upper end of a hollow muller shaft and rises and falls with the shaft. On a rotatable sleeve are brackets to which are coupled a plurality of tension springs the opposite ends of which are attached to the llywheel.
rlhe muller is carried by a vertically extending hollow shaft or tube, through which the material to be treated is fed to the space between the muller and said plate. The hol low shaft or tube is rotated by a. sleeve member mounted in suitable bearings in the framework an d the extension thereof, and is driven by gearing. The hollow shaft is also keyed or splined to the sleeve so as to permit of vertical movement therein. A circular guideway or collar is formed on the vertical feed tube or shaft. A split sheave or band passed around this circular guideway or collar and is of such a size that the feed tube may revolve freely in said sheave or band. An operating lever is pivoted in trunnions or other suitable bearings in the side of the n1a chine frame and has one end coupled or con nected by suitable means such as pivots to the sheave or band so that it can control the movement of said sheave. A cani is mounted on a countershaft driven by worm or other reduction. gearing.
An adjustable contact plate or block is provided on the outer end of the operating' lever, with which the cam contacts in order that said operating lever may be depressed at predetermined intervals. rl`his action causes the feed tube of the machine, and its attached grind ing surface to be raised and descend on the material to be crushed between the revolvable and fixed surfaces of the machine.
In order that the invention may be more readily understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l is an elevation of the improved crusher.
Figure 2 is an end view thereof partly in sect-ion. 'A l Figure 3 is a perspective view of the cam operated lever.
The machine is mounted on a base l to which the main frame 5 is bolted. An extension` frame (i is supported above the main frame by means of columns or distance members 7.
.ln the main franie 5 and extension frame G bearings e are provided to support a sleeve S) having at its lower end a bevel gear l() and at its upper end a series of brz'iekets ll.
The hollow shaft or feed tube 12 slides through tl i sleeve 9 but is keyed or splined thereto in order to rotate therewith. To the upper end of the hollow shaft a flywheel 13 is keyed.
Between the flywheel 13 and sleeve 9 tension springs 14 are provided, these may be secured at their respective ends to lthe :fivwheel 13 and the respective brackets 11 by eye bolts 15 or the like. l
The lower end of the shaft 12 is formed with a flange 16 to which the muller 17 is bolted. Above the lower flange 16 of the hollow shaft a'guide is formed between two collars 18. A sheave or band 19 is loosely .moimted in the guide, and has two pivot pins 2() only one of which is shown, on which are mounted the forked ends 2l of a `cam operated lever 22.
The cam operated lever 22 is pivoted to the main frame and has a renewable contact face 23 which engaged by the cam 24. This cam 241i may have two or more arms, three being illustrated, and is mounted. on a shaft 25 which is rotated by reduction gearing driven from the main shaft. The sleeve is also driven from the main shaft 2G by bevel gear 27, 10 and chain and sprocket gea-r 2S, 29, 30.
As the sleeve 9 revolves but does not slide up or down, and as the ly wheel 13 and hollow shaft l2 rise and fall in addition to their rotary movement, the tension of the springs 14: is increased as the fly wheel 13 and shaft 12 rise. In the downward movement the contraction of the springs 14 causes a powerful rotary crushing effect to be imparted to the muller 17.
I claim:
1. A milling machine of the class described .Comprising in combination a hollow muller shaft arranged for reciprocating movement, a muller secured to the lower end of said shaft, a fly wheel mounted on the upper end of said shaft, a guide element on the shaft intermediate the muller and fly wheel, a sheave in the guide element, a pivoted cam lever connected to said sheave, reduction gear, a countershaft driven thereby, a cam mounted on said counter-shaft and engaging .aid cam lever, a sleeve, bearings in which said sleeve is mounted, said muller shaft being arranged to reciprocate in said sleeve, means for rotating the sleeve and tension Springs connecting said sleeve and said fly wheel.
2. A milling machine adapted to impart a combined rotary and crushing blow to a mnller, comprising in combination a vertically extending shaft, a sleeve in which said shaft is sljidably mounted, said sleeve being adapted to rotate the shaft, a fly wheel mounted upon said shaft and resiliently connected to said rotatable sleeve, means to rotate said sleeve, and cam operated means adapted to reciprocate said shaft and impart acrushing blow to the muller.
3. A milling machine adapted to impart a combined rotary and crushing blow to a mullcr, comprising in combination a muller shaft mounted for reciprocating n'iovement, a rotatable sleeve surrounding said shaft and within which sleeve said shaft rcciprocatcs, said sleeve being adapted to rotate said shaft, a fly wheel mounted on said shaft and resilicntly connected to said sleeve, means to rotate said sleeve and cam operated means for reciprocating said mullcr shaft and thereby imparting a powerful crushing etl'ect to the mullet.
et. A millingmachine adapted to impart a combined rotary and crushil'lg blow to a muller, comprising in combination a vertically extending muller shaft, a llv wheel mounted on the upper end of said muller shaft, a rotatable sleeve surrounding said muller shaft and within which sleeve said shaft reciprocates, said sleeve being adapted to rotate said shaft, tension springs flexibly to rotate said sleeve, and cam'operated means for reciprocating said muller shaft to impart a crushing et'ect to the muller.
connecting said tly wheel to said sleeve, means A MOS CAMPBELL HAMEY.
