To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HARRIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Webster City, in the county of Hamilton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Safety-Shield and Self-Sharpener for Razors, of which cation.
The object of this invention is to provide an improved safety shield for razors.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved automatic Sharpener for razors.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved attachment for razors which will act as a combined safety shield and automatic Sharpener for said razors.
A further object of this invention is to provide means for adjusting a safety shield attachment for razors.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination of elements hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims and illust-rated by the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary razor showing my improved device attached thereto in position for practical use, a portion of the handle being broken away to economize space. Fig. 2 is a side elevation opposite to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4: is a cross-section on the indicated line t--t of Fig. 1, also on an enlarged scale.
In the construction and mounting of the device as shown the numeral 1() designates the handle and 11 the blade of an ordinary razor. A body plate 12 is provided, and preferably is made of some light metal. The lower portion 13 of the plate 12 is of approximately the same length as the blade 11 of the razor, and lies parallel with and adjacent to the lower portion of said blade. The plate 12 is bent outwardly at an angle at 111 and is again bent at 15 and extends upwardly therefrom parallel with the lower portion 13. The plate 12 also is bent at right angles at 16 and extends laterally above the top of the blade 11 of the razor. The upper portion of the plate 12 preferably is shorter than the lower portion 13, as shown in Fig. 1. Spring arms 17, 18 are formed on or xed to the lateral portion of the following is a specithe plate 12 and extend downwardly thereblade 11 opposite to from on the side of the l the lower portion 13 of said plate.
The spring arms 17, 18 are bent inwardly and are adapted to press against the blade 11 and hold the device in intimate Contact therewith. Ears 19, 2O are formed on or xed to end portions of the lower portion 13 of the plate 12 and extend downwardly therefrom. The ears 19, 2O are apertured and carry a roller 21 mounted for rotation between said ears and below the plate 12. The roller 21 preferably is composed of hardened steel or some composition for sharpening, and is adapted to roll against the edge of the blade 11. The upper lateral portion of the plate 12 is provided with a threaded aperture, and a thumb screw 22 is mounted therein. The lower end portion of the thumb screw 22 is adapted to bear against the top of the blade 11, thus providing means for adjusting the device relative to said blade.
In the practical use of this device the attachment is placed in position by slipping it over the end of the blade 11, the spring arms 17 18 engaging the side of the blade and holding the device in position. rI he device is adjusted by means of the thumb screw 22 so that the lower portion of the roller 21 projects a slight distance below the edge of the blade 11, as shown inthe drawing. The razor may then be used in the ordinary manner, the. roller 21 being on the side thereof away from the surface being shaved. The roller 21 acts as a shield or safety device for the edge of the blade 11, since any tilting of said blade which ordinarily would cause it to cut theV skin will bring the roller 21 into contact with the cuticle and prevent cutting thereof. The roller 21 also prevents the edge of the blade 11 being brought into cutting contact with any projection on the surface being shaved. During most of the operation of sha-ving the roller 21 will be caused to roll in its bearings, either through contact with the face or by The use of this device will afford convenience, comfort and safety to those who prefer the ordinary razor to the usual `t'orms of safety razors, and will in no wise intertere with the gliding or diagonal stroke commonly employed in the use of the ordinary razor.` It may be attached to any razor of the ordinary type, which differ widely in siz'e, and may be quickly and readily adjusted by means of the thumb screw 22.
