To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE A. NELSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Scuttles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in coal scuttles and the main object of the invention is to provide a scuttle having a central partition and a base for the same positioned a suitable distance away from the bottom of the scuttle so as to provide a series of compartments adapted for the reception of wood, different grades of coal or coal and ashes as may be desired.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having hinged doors normally closing the upper compartments while the body of the scuttle is provided with sliding doors adjacent the base provided by the partition and sliding doors closing openings communicating with the lower compartment between the false bottom and the base of the scuttle.

With the above, and other objects in view which will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings there has been illustrated the simple and preferred embodiment of the invention and in which,

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view partially in section. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical sectional view upon the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a partially horizontal sectional view upon the line 22 of Fig. 1.

In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the scuttle proper. This scuttle 1 comprises a substantially oval shaped member provided with an open enlarged top converging to a closed reduced bottom 2. The scuttle 1 is provided adjacent its bottom upon one of its sides with an elongated opening 3 and the top and bottom edges provided by this opening are provided with offset guide ways or members 4 which are adapted for the reception of a pair of sliding doors 5 and 6. Positioned upon the side of the scuttle a suitable distance above the opening 3 is a pair of spaced openings 7 spaced a suitable distance from each other and each being provided with an upwardly inclined mouth piece or member 8 eXtendin a suitable distance away from the side of the scuttle and each having their sides inclined as clearly illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings. The inclined sides of the months 8 are provided with vertically extending guide Ways 9 which are adapted for the reception of sliding doors 10, and through the medium of which access to a pair of compartments within the scuttle, and hereinafter to be described, may be readily attained.

The numeral 11 designates a false bottom for the scuttle. This bottom 11 is constructed of any suitable metal and is provided with a flat base portion having sides in clined upwardly toward the sides of the scuttle and adapted to be secured thereto through the medium of retaining elements 12. The base of the false bottom 11 is centrally provided with a pair of spaced upwardly extending lugs or projections 13 which are adapted to receive between them a partition 14. This partition 14 is of a width corresponding with that of the scuttle and is adapted to contact tightly against the walls thereof. The base 11 is positioned a suitable distance away from the bottom 2 of the scuttle so as to provide the lower compartment 15 and the opening 3 normally closed by the doors 5 and 6 communicates with this compartment so as to render access thereto when the compartment is filled with wood or other fuel.

The partition 14 is adapted to be positioned directly intermediate of the openings 7 so that when the doors 10 of either of the compartments 16 or 17 provided by this partition are raised the contents of the compartments may be readily fed through the openings 7 and directed to the mouth of a stove, furnace or the like through the medium of the inclined mouth piece 8 carried by the scuttle.

In order to reinforce the upper open mouth of the scuttle 1 as well as to retain the partition 14 in proper contact against the sides of the scuttle, I have provided a pair of substantially cross sectional U-shaped bracing members 18 and 19. These members 18 and 19 are positioned a distance apart corresponding with the thickness of the partition 14 to which they are secured through the medium of retaining elements 20. The ends of the members 18 and 19 are provided Withsuitable flanges 21 which are also adapted for the reception of securing elements 22, through the medium of which the members are retained upon the sides of the scuttle.

Connected intermediate of the top of the central portions of the members 18 and 19 is a longitudinally extending strip 23-, and this strip is provided with suitable hinges 24 which are adapted to be secured to the inner ends of suitable covers 25 and 26 which are adapted to serve as closures for the compartments l6 and 17. These closures 25 and 26 are each provided with a projecting lip 27 upon its outer end which serves as a finger hold, through the medium of which either of the covers may be raised easily and quickly.

The scuttle 1 is provided with a suitable bail or handle 29 having its free ends connected with the sides of the scuttle through the medium of eyes 80' securely connected with the scuttle, These eye members 30 are provided with a plurality of hook members 31 which are adapted to receive the eyes of stove accessories, such as an ash shovel, lifter or poker, and these implements are shown in position upon the scuttle in Fig. 1 ofthe drawings.

From the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be noted that I have provided a comparatively simple and extremely novel and useful device for the purpose intended, one wherein the several compartments may be employed to receive difierent kinds of fuel or ashes, one wherein access is readily attainable to any of the compartments and also wherein the openings to the compartments are provided with'suitable closures to prevent the outlet of dust from the said compartments.

Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:

A scuttle provided with a central compartment and a base portion positioned away from the bottom of the scuttle, the said scuttle being provided with openings and having doors for these openings, removable U- shaped bracing members secured to thesides of the scuttle and arranged in spaced relation with each other, a partition between the U-shaped bracing members, a plate connected with these bracing members, doors hingedly connected with the plate and a handle for the scuttle.
