Description

WILLIAM I). FLYNI\T, OF SPRAY, NORII-I CAROLINA.
BUCKLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Pa-tented Nov. 15, 1010.
Application fi1ed July 21, 1908. Se1ial I To. 444,599.
T0 all whom it mag; concem:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM D. FLYNN, 2L citizen 0f the United States, residing at Spmy, in the county of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to buckles adapted for use in connection With suspenders 01 for any purpose to which the buckle is applicable; zmd the object thereof is t0 provide a buckle 0f such f0rm that the connection 01 a suspender strap to the buckle Will be familitated, and, furthermore, Will overcome the necessity of stitching the overlapping portion of the strap to the buckle, the latter means of securement being the general 1node 01" connecting a strap to a buck1e.
A further object 0f the invention is t0 provide a buckle to which czu1 be readily at tached finger tabs without stitching t0 enable the buckle to be conveniently shifted in the desired direction upon the strap t0 lengthen 01 130 decrease the length 01 the strap relatively to the supported pa1t engaged by the strap. v \Vith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the nove] coustruction of buckle hereinafter 11101e fully explained in preferred form.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a buckle in accordance with (bis invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a vercical sectional view 0f a buckle in accordanee With this inven tion, showing the suspender stmp and finger tab secured thereto. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the buckle with the finger tab attached.
'Referring to the drawings in detail, a buckle in accordance Wih this invention comprises a body portion 1 having a part thereof olfset as at 2 so as t0 project from the outer face 3 of the body portion 1. The 1atter at its t0p is provided wich a depressed portion 4. N ear the lower part of the body portion 1 the latter is slitted as at 5 to provide an opening 5 und an outwardly ex tending angular und bendable securing tongue 6, the function 0f which Will be hereinafter referred to. The offset portion 2 is formed Wich elongated s10ts 7 8, 9, 10, the s1ots 7 and 10 being of greater width than the slots 9 and 8, and the said s1ots 7 130 10 form a series of bars 11, 12 and 13.
The depressed ortion 4 constitutes a combined seat and guide for ehe strap 14. The openings 7 and 10 allow for the assage 01 th strap through 13116 buckle and the openlngs 8 und 9 provide means f01 positioning the tab 15 in position; and in this latter connection it Will be stated that the (ab is passed inwardly through the opening 10, then outwarclly through the opening 9, the11 around the bar 12 und through the opening 8 und then outwardly through the opening 7 This manner 0f positiomng the tab 15 connects the tab by means of friction t0 the buckle and either 0f the projecting ends 01 the tab can be engaged und operated by the wearer and the buckle shifted up0n the strap 14. The latter is connected to the buckle in the following manner: The strap 14 is passed 10 the rear from the f1ont through opening 10 und back t0 front through opening 7 a.nd bent upon itseli as at 17. The end 16 of the strap is passed from rear to freut through the slit 5 and bent over the lower ortion of the buckle. The tongue 6 is then compressed which securely fastens tbe e11d 16 110 the lower p01. tion 01' the buckle without the necessity of securing the end 16 0f the strap 11 t0 *;he buckle by the transverse 1'0W 0f stitching which is usually employed f01' such purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what is c1aimed as new, is:
1. A buckle comprising a body portion having an intermediate outwardly oifset portion formed with a plurality of transversely extending slots and ba1s, the upper partof the body having a transverse opening above the oifset portion and an upper terminal depressed bar, said body being further provided in c1ose proximity t0 its lower edge with a transverse s1it and a compressible tongue for immovably securing the enc1 of a suspender stmp t0 the buckle, said transverse openings constituting means for the adjustable passage of the suspender strap thgrethrough und for the application 0f a ta 2. A buckle comprising a body portion provided with a plurality of transversely extending slots and bars including an upper transverse s1ot and depressed bar, said body being further provid acl in c1ose proximity to its lower edge with a transverse slit and a compressible tongue, a suspender strap having 0ne extremity inserted through the said slit at the 10Wer edge of t-he body and secured by the compressible tongue, the remaining part of the strap being inserted through one 0:E the transverse slots next above the slit und also through the up er transverse slot over the depressed bar, an a tab also inserted through the transverse s1ot next above the slit and the upper s1ot and through the s1ots between the said upper and lower s1ots.
3. A buckle comprising a body ortion having a transverse .opening near its top, and a, transverse opening near its bottom and an intermediately outstruck portion formed with transverse openings and bars, said. body further provided in close prox imity to its 10Wer edge Wih a transversely extending s1it and a normally outwardly projecting bendable tongue, the transverse openings constituting means for the adjustable passage of a suspender strap therethrou h and the application 01" a taib, and the s11t adapted. to have the one end of the suspender strap inserted therethrough and secured by compression of the tongue thereagainst.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto sei: my band in presence 0f two subscribing witnesses.
