Each hanger has upon one side a boss 7, which is coned at 8. The hub 9 of the type bar has a large eye 10, which is formed with an internal V-shaped ball groove 11 COIItEIII'UDg a circle of bearing balls 12. The

The. structure, it will-be observed, is very compact or thin, each of the elements 1 and 6 forming a thin'plate, and these being placed very closelytogether, so that type barsmay osely in the segment, Noth be assembled c ing projects from either the hanger or the type bar except the boss 7 of the hanger, and this projects mto the eye ofthe type bar, so that the type bar and hangermay lie closely together. The boss on the hanger not only provides a--cone for the balls to run on, but also affords sufficient thickness of metal for engagement by the threads of the screw 13, even though the hanger is recessed at 16 to receive the nut 15. Said recess may be of circular form and of less diameter than the the rear side of the segment and extending into the slotted portion thereof; the inner portion. of-the groove being enlarged or chambered at 21 to fit the rod 18, so that the latter cannot be displaced laterally, as itcannotpass into the small portion of the groove 20. It will be understood that the' rod may be inserte endwise into the chambered portion 21 of the groove.

After being hooked upon the rod 18, the hangers 6 are retained by a pair of keeper plates 22, the latter secured to the front of the segment by screws 23, which pass through slots 24: in the keeper plates; the slots extending in such directions as to permit the plates to be slipped up to release the hangers 6, or slipped down to secure them.

To detach a type bar, it is only necessary to release the screws 23 holding one of the keeper plates 22, and then to push said keeper plate upwardly as at Figs. 3 and 6, whereupon the hanger may be lifted a trifle and unhooked from the rod 18, and then type bar to the segment the operation is reversed. The ends of the keeper-plates 22 may fit closely in guides 27 and 28, the latter answering for the adjoining ends of the two plates; .said guides being in the form of elbow plates secured upon the front of the segment and catching over the plates 22.

The number of the plates 22 may be varied, and other variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention.

The hangers 6 may be employed in connection with other forms of joint between the hanger and the type bar; and the herein described type bar joint may be employed in ct ectionwith other means for attaching the hanger to the framework of the writing machine.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

1. A typewriting machine having in combination, a segment having radial slots, a series of type bar hangers in the form of plates seated in said slots and formed with hooks catching upon a rod mounted in said segment, and a plurality of independently releasable retaining plates upon the segment for said hangers; each plate serving to retain a plurality of said hangersand having a plurality of screws to clamp it against the hangers, each plate slotted to permit it to be moved off from the hangers to release ,them.

2. 5. A type-bar segment provided on one side with radial slots and having within said slots a curved rod upon which the type bars are supported,- said rod lying in a groove formed in the other side of the seg-- hangers inserted in said slots and having hooks to catch over said rod, and means for releasably securing the hangers in the slots, said securing means comprising a pair of plates secured upon the segment and engaging the hangers, said plates being secured by means of screws passing through slots in the plates and threaded into the segment,

whereby upon releasing the screws the plates may be drawn up to release the hangers.
