Letters Patent No; 97,497, dated December 7 1869.
. I V IMPROVED, raocnss or mrsma BLAcx.
The Schedule referred to in these'lletters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES GEE, of West New Brighton, in the county of Richmond, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Process of Dyeing Black; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to simplify and accelerate the dyeing and sizing of all kinds of fabrics in black, and refers more partioularlyto the dyeing of cotton or other fabrics made of vegetable fibres.
The invention consists not only in a novel method of combining the dyeing and sizing-processes, so as to save time and labor, but also in a new composition of ingredients, as hereinafter more fully described.
Heretofore it required the labor of six or eight. men for about three days to die a piece of fabric,
' while with my process the same work canbe done by two or three men in one day. It is, therefore, evident that my process is considerably cheaper than any of those heretofore employed.
Thefollowing is a description of my process:
The gray or other fabric to'be dyed, is first run through a mixture of extract of logwood andsulphate of copper, commonly termed bluestoue, and receives thereby the first, or ground color. It may then be hung up for about ten hours to be dried, and I prefer to have it thus dried, although it is not absolutely necessary.
The fabric is next run through the sizing-machine or mangle, or through any machine having, two or more rollers, in which it is-at once sized and dyed.
The sizing-material, whatever that may he, usually a mixture of flour and starch, is mixed with bichromate of potash, which is the finishing dyeing-matter.
This method saves the necessity of dyeing and sizing separately, and the intermediate labor, and is very important in economizing time, labor, and implements.- Fabrics which have to be sized twice, are dyed and sized at once, at the first process; that is to say, the logwood and sulphate of copper are mixed with sizingmaterial in the same manner in which the bichromate of potash is mixed with the same at the second process.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters -Patent-- 1. Combining the dyeing and sizing-processes into single operations, substantially as herein specified.
2. The combination of sulphate of copper and logwood w th sizing-material, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The combination of bichromate of potash with sizing-matter, to be used substantially as specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 13th day of. October, 1869.
- I JAMES GEE.
