EMERCiENCY-EXIT-DOOR LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. November 10, 1909.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
Serial No. 527,349.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY W. Honoxnv- SON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Emergency-Exit-Door Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to emergency exit door locks, and its object is to provide means whereby any latch that can be operated from within by the door knob, and from without by a. latch-key, can also be operated to release the door by mere pressure upon a part exposed adjacent to the door. Preferably this operating part is so located relatively to the door and its frame that it will be encountered by any one who attempts to make a hurried exit from the building. The device shown and described has also this to recommend itthat it is cheaply made, and can be applied to the right kind of a door without changing the latter, and without the services of a skilled mechanic.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is an elevation of the inner side of a door equipped with an emergency attachment made in ac cordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a view from the right hand side of Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is the same View as Fig. 4, but with the parts in the operating position.
The door 1, which opens outwardly, is of the usual form, and its latch is operated by an ordinary knob 2 on the inside, provided with a shank 2*. On the inner knob, as for example on its shank 2 is fixed an arm that is comprised of bent metal clamping bars 3 and 4 (Fig. 3), roughened on their inner faces, and clamped on the shank 2 tightly by cross-bolts 5, 5. The end of the piece 4 that lies toward the hinged side of the door has an extension 6, preferably round in cross-section (Fig. 4:)- On the door, a short distance from the end of the extension 6, is a bracket 7, and in line with it, near the other edge of the door, a similar bracket 8. These brackets constitute hearings or supports for the ofiset ends 9 and 10 of a rod 11. Said rod has suitably fastened upon it a plate 12 bearing in large letters the word Push or a similar phrase. On the end of the part9, between the knob 2 and the bracket 7 is fixed an arm 13. In the end of this arm is a slot 14; that engages with the extension 6. Obviously, a move ment of the arm in a downward direction will depress the part 6, and as the clamp of which it is a part is solidly fastened to the shank of the knob, the door will be unlatched. Such a downward movement of the arm 13 is accomplished by pushing the plate 12 toward the door. The rod 11 that is attached to said plate lies above the offset ends 9 and 10, and therefore a movement of said rod toward the door results in a partial rotation of the ends 9 and 10 in their respective bearings 7 and S. This gives a downward movement to the slotted end of the arm 13, as just described, and turns the knob. The action of these parts is practically instantaneous, because of the short length of the offsets on the rod 11 compared with the length of the arm 13. The longer the latter is made, of course, the less will be the movement required for the plate 12 to release the door. After the door has been opened, it is closed and latched again by grasping the bar 12 and pulling the door inwardly. This movement operates the pyarts in the opposite direction and resets t em.
This attachment does not prevent the door tempting an exit; substantially as shown and described.
