Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1910.
Application filed March 15, 1910. Serial No. 549,478.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM L. HEUSER,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to faucets, and the principal object of the same is to provide a novel body therefor which is provided with a hot and a cold water pipe and a single plug that controls the discharge of water from said body, said plug being adapted to permit either a discharge of hot or cold Water from the body.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, whereinz- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of the improved faucet. Fig. 2 is a vertical trans verse sectional view taken on the line 2-2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of the improved faucet, the turning plug being omitted. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the turning plug. Fig. 5 is a top plan view.
The improved faucet comprises a body 1 that may have an ornamental exterior, and which has a centrally located tapering ver tical opening 2, in which the longitudinally tapering turning plug 3 is rotatably mounted. Said plug has 1ts shank Pprojecting above the top of body and is squared for the reception of the collar 5 of the handle 6. A screw 7 is employed for detachably fastening the collar to the squared end of the shank. The lower end of plug 3 projects beyond the bottom of body 1 and is provided with a central threaded opening 8 for the reception of the threaded shank of a set screw 8 A spring washer 9 is interposed between the enlarged head 10 of the set screw and the bottom of body 1 and constantly exerts a downward pull on the plug 3 which tends to tighten the plug within opening 2.
A nozzle 11 is provided for the body 1, said nozzle communicating with a pair of grooves 12 which are formed on opposite sides of the upper portion of opening 2 of body 1. Pipes 18-1 1 project from opposite sides of body 1, one of said pipes being for hot water and the other for cold water. Passages 1516 are provided in the base of body 1 for placing said pipes 13-14 in communication with central opening 2.
Turning plug 3 is provided with a longitudinally arranged recess 17 on its surface, said recess being of the same length as the distance between the bottoms of passages 15-l6 and the tops of grooves 12 and is adapted to place one of said passages and one of said grooves in communicatiomwhile at the same time cutting 01f communication between the other groove and passage.
Preferably the water pipes 13-l l and the nozzle 11 are integral with body 1.
It will be seen from the foregoing that by rotating plug 3 a supply of hot water or cold water may be obtained. It will also be seen that by releasing the set screw from the bottom of plug 3, said plug may be removed from body 1 to permit access to be had to the interior of said body.
hat I claim as my invention is 1. A faucet comprising a body provided with a central opening, said body. being provided with oppositely disposed upper grooves and oppositely disposed lower passages, a nozzle communicating with said grooves, a water pipe for each passage, and a turning plug provided with a longitudinal recess for placing either of said passages and the respective groove in communication.
2. A faucet comprising a body provided with oppositely disposed upper grooves, a nozzle communicating with said grooves, said body also provided with oppositely disposed passages, a supply pipe for each passage, and a turning plug in said body provided with means for placing one of said grooves and passages in communication and at the same time cutting off communication between the other groove and passage.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
