Be it known that I, NELS L. OLSON, a subj ect of the King of Sweden, and a resident of Butte, in the county of Silverbow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Plow- Points, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in plows and has for an object, among others, to provide a novel construction of plow point together with means whereby the same may be supported in such. manner that it can be adjusted both laterally and up and down at its point in order to regulate the depth of the furrow as well as the pointing of inland; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side view, from the landside, of a plow provided with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the point in place on a share, part of the latter being broken away. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the socketed portion of the point. Fig. 4 is a side view of the point in place on the share, the latter being partly broken away. Fig. 5 is a cross section on about line 55 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 illustrates the wedge in detail. Fig. 7 is a rear elevation of the point. Fig. 8 illustrates a slightly difl'erent construction of point in which the side plate of the point is extended upwardly to form a colter. Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of the point. Fig. 9 is a detail top plan view of the front portion of the point. Fig. 10 is a detail perspective view, of a slightly different point. Fig. 11 is a detail cross-sectional view showing a slightly different fastening means, and Fig. 12 is a detail section on about line 12-12 of Fig. 9.
In Fig. 1 the beam A with its clevis B, the plow share 0 and the land-side D may be of ordinary construction. The share E is also in general respects of ordinary construction and may be secured to the share C in the usual manner and the clevis B is an ordinary plain clevis.
Ordinarily the adjustment of a plow so far as the de th of furrow and the pointing of inland is concerned, has heretofore been accomplished by changing the pointing of attachment of the whilfle-tree by means of a universal clevis of ordinary construction and well-known in the art. By my invention I provide for securing this adjustment of the plow as to depth and lateral pointin by the improved point secured and adjusted in a manner more fully described hereinafter.
As shown, the share C is provided at its land-side with a vertical flange E in which is formed a bolt hole E for the passage of the bolt F which secures the removable plow point adjustably to the upright flange E of the share C in the operation of the invention.
The plow point G has the side plate Gr which may be extended, if desired, as shown in Fig. 8 to operate as a colter in cutting the sward whenever desired and the point also has a body portion G2 socketed at G to receive the point of the share E and at the front end of the point is formed the laterally extending or flat edge G Near its rear end the side plate G is provided with a longitudinal slot G rabbeted at G in the outer face of the side plate G and this slot receives the bolt F and its rabbet or recess G receives the eccentric head F which by the turning of the bolt F operates to raise and lower the rear end of the point G relatively to the share, thus raising and lowering the front end of the point to regulate the'depth of the plow as will be understood from the drawing.
A wedge H is inserted between the side plate G of the point and the flange E of the share E and has a longitudinal slot H for the reception of the bolt I-I so the wedge may be adjusted to the front or rear between the said parts G and E in securing an adjustment laterally of the front end of the point G as will be understood from the drawings, see especially Fig. 2.
A washer F on the bolt F between the nut F and the flange E of the share affords a board bearing for the nut and permits the convenient adjustment of the parts and the tightening thereof in position whenever desired. By this means any desired adjustment of the front end of the point either laterally or vertically, no matter how minute can be effected so as to secure the adjustment in or out of land by the lateral adjustment of the front end of the point; or the regulation as to depth, by the vertical adjustment of the point by the turning of the bolt F within the opening E can be conveniently effected.
The recess G is formed as shown in Fig; 3 to accommodate any variations as to length of share from its point to the slot E also to facilitate the assembling of the parts.
It may be preferable, especially for use in clay soils, to split the top plate of the point Gr from its rear end at line with the inner face of the upright flange G of the point, thus making the rear edge of thesaid top plate operate as a spring in the vertical adjustment of the point relatively to the share and I prefer in this construction to bring the rear edge of the said top plate practically to a feather edge so it will coincide with the upper face of the share at its juncture therewith, as will be understood from the drawing. Manifestly, however, where so desired the said top plate may be without the slit G as shown in Fig. 10 of the drawing. It will also be understood that instead of using the eccentric bolt head F for raising and lowering the plow point, I may use the construction shown in Fig. 11, in which thebolt hole E is elongated vertically so the bolt I may be set up or down in said bolt hole in securing the vertical adjustment of the plow point.
lVhen it becomes necessary to replace a worn out point by a new one, it is only necessary to slac-ken up on the nut F 2 and slide the point forwardly, the rear end of the slot Gr being open. Then a new point may be replaced by reversing the described operation. V
For the foregoing reasons, it is preferred to extend the slot G to the rear end of the point, but manifestly said slot may be made as shown in Fig. 10 without departing from some of the principles of the invention.
It will be noticed that in securing the vertical adjustment of the point up and down even to the extremes of such adjustment, the land-side, mold board and share of the plow -maintain their normal positions whereas when the adjustment is effected by means of the universal clevis as before referred to, and possibly by a wheel near the front end of the plow beam, the plow will either ride on the point of the share or on the rear end of the land-side causing a very unsteady movement of the plow and a resulting inconvenience to the plow-man.
I claim:
1. A plow point having a front flat edge and provided in rear thereof with a socket and with a vertical side plate and having in I said side plate a longitudinal slot extending to its rear end combined with a plow share having its front end fitting in the socket of the plow point and having an upright flange alongside the vertical plate of the plow point and provided in said flange with a bolt hole, a wedge plate between the vertical plate of the plow point and the upright flange of the share and having a longitudi- G about in nal slot registering with the bolt hole in the flange and the slot in the plate of the plow point anda securing bolt passed through said wedge, point plate and share flange and having an eccentric head operating upon the plow point to adjust the same outwardly, all substantially as described, wherebythe plow point may be 'adjusted vertically and laterally at its front end, substantially as set forth.
2. A removable plow point havinga laterally extending ed e at its front end combined with means for securing said point position with capacity for lateral and vertical adjustment at its said front end, substantially as set forth. v
8. The combination with a plow shareof a removable point applied thereto and intermediate devices between the plow point and share whereby the front end of the point may be adjusted vertically and laterally substantially as set forth.
4. The combination with a share and a plow pointfltting removably thereon, of a bolt connecting the plow point and share and adapted to permit the lateral and vertical adjustment of thepoint at its front end, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a plow share of a point fitting removably thereonand adjustable laterally at its front end, means for securing the pointtothe share and a .wedge interposed between the share and point whereby it will effect an adjustment of the point relatively to the share, substantially as set forth. 7
6. A share having an upright flange combined with a point having a socket for the reception of the share and also provided with an upright plate alongside the flange of the share and a bolt connecting the flange and plate, and having an eccentric portion whereby the point may be adjusted up and down at its front end, substantially as set forth.
7. A point having a laterally extending front edge and an upright plate extending to its rear end and having in said plate a longitudinal slot opening at the rear endof the plate combined with a plow share en- 5 gaged at its front end with the point and having a flange extending alongside the upright plate-of the point and a bolt connecting said plate and flange and extending through the slot in the pointplate, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination of a share, a plow point fitted removably to said share, a bolt connecting said share and point and having means whereby to adjust the point ver- 125 tically, and means for adjusting the point laterally relatively to the share, substantially as set forth. V
9. A plow point having a front flat edge and provided in rear thereof witha socket 130 and with a vertical side plate combined with the plow share fitting at its front end in the socket of the plow point and having an upright flange alongside the vertical side plate of said point, a bolt connecting said share and point and a wedge plate between the vertical plate of the plow point and the upright flange of the share, substantially as set forth.
10. The combination of a plow point having a socket and an upright side plate, a plow share fitting at its front end in the socket of the plow point and having an upright flange alongside the vertical plate of the plow point, a bolt connecting said upright flange and side plate and having an eccentric portion operating to secure a vertical adjustment of the said parts relatively and a wedge operating between said flange and side plate, substantially as set forth.
11. The combination of a plow point having a socket and a vertical side plate and having the top plate of said socket free for a distance from its rear end whereby it may operate with a spring action combined with the plow share fitting at its front end in the socket of the point and having an upright flange, a bolt connecting said flange with the side plate of the plow point and securing said parts with capacity for vertical adjustment and a wedge operating between the said flange and side plate, substantially as set forth.
12. The combination with a plow share, of a removable point applied thereto and having a socket to receive the point of the plow share with the top wall of said socket free for a distance from its rear end whereby it may operate with a spring action, a bolt between the share and the plow point and securing said parts in position with capacity for vertical adjustment, and a wedge operating between the point and share and adapted to adjust the point laterally, substantially as set forth.
13. A removable plow point combined with a share to which said point is fitted, a bolt connect-ing said share and point and having an eccentric portion whereby to adjust the point vertically, and means for adjusting the point laterally, relative to the share, substantially as set forth.
14. The combination of a plow share, a point fitting adjustably on the plow share, means for adjusting said point vertically at its front end, and means for adjusting said point laterally at its front end, substantially as set forth.
