Description

G. M. GRAHAM. REINFORCED GONGRETE STRUCTURE.
APP IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII Q.

will hereinafter more fully appear.
U iTEn sTA Es ATENT OFFICE. I
Q G QRGE M. GRAHAM, or cHIo eo, ILLI oIs, AssiGNoE, BY MEsNE ASSIGNMENTS, To
s sPE sIoN sTEEL. ooNcEE E coMr Y, A CORPORATION or DELAWARE.
To-all'whom it may concernri I Be it known that I, GEORGE M. GRAHAM, a citizen-of theUnite'd States of America, anda resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State 'of' Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reinforced' Concrete Structures, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to reinforced concre'te structures in which wires or rods in spaced relation are secured to a round bo'r der'frame to form a'skeletoncenter for receiving and supporting the concrete mass during theereotion of the structure. And the present improvement has for-its object to providea simple. and efficient formation and combination of the marginalfranie and Skeleton wire or rod centers forming a unit of the structure, in which the proper tension of the component "wires or rods of said center is attained in a ready, certain and convenient manner, and with whlch a more substantial and rigid outer-web is provided for the coatingof concrete forming the outer portion of a vertical wall, than 'is necessary for the inner portion of said wall.
and a like increased strength and rigidity in the upper or tread surfaceof a floor of the structure over what is provided for the por-' tion thereof which forms a ceiling, all
In the accompanying drawings :Figure 1, is a detail sectional plan of the present construction as adapted for a floor or other,
horizontal part of a concrete structure. Fig. 2, 1s a sectlonal elevation, on line wm, Fig. 1, showing the Wire orrod center in course of application. Fig. 8, is a similar series of vertical posts or columns, and 2 a seriespf horizontzl round beams or girders coupled to ether and to the posts 1 by coupling mem ers 3 to formthe skeleton border frame which supports the wire or rod center hereinafter described, and the inclosing mass of concrete to form the walls, floors, etc., a reinforced concrete structure. And said reinforcing frame is preferably of the suspension type described 1n detail 1n a comstrand past the other,
Specification of Letters Patent. I Patented N OV 1,1910. Application filed April 21, 1909. 7 1

' gree. To such ends said formation, of the wire or rod center will comprise the follow- 1ng: v I
at are a series ofindepcndent links of the hoop type and" which exteml between and around a pair ofopposed beams 2, and preferably 1n the crossed relation, shown,.to constitute the skeleton web or center of the, reinforcingframe aforesaid. In the present improvement each of said links is formed from I a wireor rod of the requisite lengthplziced Iunder the opposed pair ofround beams-3 to constitute a single wire under strand 5'ofthe skeleton center or web; then loop ed around the respective beams and extended in-opposite directions to constitute a doublewire upper strand 6 of said skeleton center or web. The respective ends of the wire or rod are then successively looped around the respective beams, and their terminals formed into attaching 'coilsplices 7 encircling the upper double wire strands (5 aforesaid. In practice a flattened, loop shaped link 4, aforesaid is formed around the beams in the above described construction, with the excep tion of the last attaching coil splice 7, under ordinary hand tension, after which predetermined power tension is applied to the free upper strand to bring the low 'r strand and the companion upper strand under the required tension, after which the last attaching coil splice 7 .is formed to maintain the various strands at the required tension. In the application of such final or power tension, the
first attaching coil splice 7 permits of a ready independent movement-of one upper as the various strands are drawn to the required tension.
After the completion of the, series of links at as above described, and at any time previous'to the application of theconcrete mass thereto, any particular link will have its tension increased when so required by forming a twist 8 in the double wire upper strand 6, as illustrated in Fig. 4.
(As applied to a' floor orother horizontal portion of a structure, the double wirewill be underr'nost and will receive the lesser een concrete mass used 1n stress of the forming the-ceiling, and which has a, much less thickness than is necessary in the floor proper. g t
The operation of applying the concrete mass ma be any usual method, it is how 7 ever pre erred to use the particular method described in detail in my prior Letters Patent No. 888,999, dated May 26, 1908;
As applied to a wall or other vertical por-' tion of astructure, the double wire strands aforesaid will-be preferably arranged to theoutside, so'that the concrete massformin the outer layer or thickness of the wall wil' 'receivethe greater amount of support and corresponding strength. I
Having thus .fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A reinforcing frame for concrete structures comprising, a series of round border beams, and a skeleton center of flattened hoop sha ed links extendin from beam to beam, an each consisting of a single strand, at one side and 'a double strand at the other side and formed from a singlerod or wire the terminals of which end in coil splices surrounding the aforesaid double strands; substantially as set forth. y
2. A reinforcing frame for concrete structures comprising,
- Signed at Chicago,. lllinois, 12th day a series "of round border beams, and a skeleton center -ofjf flattened hoop shaped links arranged in crossed rela tion {and extending from beaufrto beating-and each consisting of a'single strand at oneside .and'a double strand 'at'the other-"side and formed from a single rod-or wire. the. terminals of which. end in coilsplices-surrounding the aforesaid double strands, substantially.
as set forth. 9
'3.- A reinforcing framefor concrete jst'ruc-, ,t'ures comprisin beams, and a s eleton center of 'flattened from beam to each consisting o a single strand.
a .series; of round border hoopshaped extending beam, an atone side and a double strand at theothe'r side and formed from a single red or wire .the terminals of which end incoilsplices surrounding the aforesaid. double strands,
said strands having a tensioning twist, sub-- stantially'as' set forth. I v o 4. A reinforcing frame for concrete structures comprisinsgk, a series of round border beams, ,and .aeleton center of flattened hoop shaped links arranged. in crossedrelation and extendingfrom beam'to beam, and 'each consisting of a'single strand at one side and a double strand at the. other side and formed from a single rod or'wirethe tenni the -aforesaid double' strands, said stran 7 having a tensioning twist, substantiallyas' set forth.

GEORGE M. GRAHAM.
