To all affirm/rit may concern Be it known that I, NiLs FREDERICK AM- innasEN, a citizen of the United States, and a. resident of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Poles, of which the following is a speciication.-
My invention relates to telegraph or other poles and its object is to improve the construction thereof in the manner hereinafter set forth.
My invention will be described by reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of my improved pole showing one way of producing the same. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the pole shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of a modification. Fig. i is an elevation of the reinforcing member shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an elevation of a fence post constructed in accordance with my invention.
In the particular drawings selected for more fully disclosing my invention, 1 represents a hollow core consisting in the present case of telescoping metallic sections of suit able length convenient for shipping. According to the preferred method of constructing the pole a sectional core is placed upon a mandrel formed ofthe sheaves 2 supported by the central rod 3, the ends of which rest on. the standards t. A layer of reinforcing material, such as the wire mesh 5, is then placed over the core and acoating of concrete or cement 6 applied to the structure. While the coating 6 may be made in any suitable manner, I prefer to form it by means of a cement gun or other suitable apparatus, whereby the cement or concrete is forcibly projected against the mesh.
In Fig. 5 the'fence post 7 constructed as above described is provided with transverse openings 8 for the wires 9, and its upper end may be closed by the concrete cap 10 cemented thereto. This form of reinforcing member is preferred for poles of the larger sizes.
The hollow core may be withdrawn if desired, as shown in Fig. 5, or may be retained to assist in strengthening the structure. It will be noted that the position of the reinforcing member is such as to strengthen the pole at the points where it is subject to tensile stresses.
One of the advantages of the present invention is that thc sections comprising the. core can be nested together and readily shipped to the place where the pole is to be set up, and the device manufactured on the spot.
In the claims I use the word concrete as covering cement or the like.
Various modifications may be made in the details shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention.
I claim:
1. The herein described method of forming hollow concrete posts or the like, which consists in mounting a suitable core upon a support, surrounding said core with a sheet of reticulated material, forcibly projecting wet concrete against said sheet and core until covered to the desired thickness, and then withdrawing the core after the concrete is set.
The herein described method of forming hollow concrete posts or the like, which consists in mounting a suitable imperforate core for rotation upon a shaft, surrounding said core with a sheet of reticulated Amaterial, and forcibly projecting wet concrete against said core and sheet, said parts being turned on the shaft during such operation so as to insure'a uniform coating of concrete on all sides thereof.
