To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, JOSEPH BENJAMIN CATHY, a citizen of the'United States, and a resident of Godfrey, in the county of Morgan and State of Georgia, have invented a new'and Improved Holding Device for Resetting Scrapers, of which the following} is a full, clear,-and exact description.
My invention relates to holding devices for resetting scrapers, and it has for its object to provide one which may be manufactured at little cost, so that all farmers and; blacksmithsmayprocure, at little expense,i means for shapingand resetting, scrapers: after they have been sharpened. When the scrapers are sharpened, after they become; dull, they are usually so out of shape that! they are of verylittle value until they are v reset. While the subject of this application has: been especially devised-for resettingscraprs used in cultivating cotton fields, it will be understood that the resetting devices may be used for otherforms, of scrapers. By referring to thedrawings, it will be seen that the base member 6 has transverse; supports 7 a frame being mounted onthe base member 6, and consisting of a horizon tal member 8 and legs 9 and 10, which are secured to the basemember '6 and which;
support the said horizontal member, two
pairs of the legs 9 being'disposed at one end of the horizontal member 8 and. onefpair of the legs 10 being disposed at the other end of the horizontal member 8. The inner pair of legs 9 has'lugs 11,.to which is,pivote'd a lever 12, the lever 12 having the terminal of one of its arms '13 disposed at substantially right an'gles todts other arm 14. Aroma member 15 is secured to the base memberG .at a centraLportion, the said 'foot member being bent at each sideof its central portion, so that its sides are disposed upwardly,
.parallel to each other, the sides being disposed one at each side of the horizontal member 8 and being disposed forwardly, and being secured thereto at 16, as shown in the drawings. The lowerportion of the foot member is disposed forwardly and downwardly tothepoint where it is secured to the base member. Pivoted to-theterminal of the arm 14$ of the lever 12, is a clamping rod 117, the clamping rod 17 being disposed rearwardly between the sides of the ,foot member 15, the rear terminal of the clamp- ,ing rod 17 being shaped into a depending .flange 18, which is disposed at an acute angle relativelyto the body "of the clamping rod. The forward side of this depending flange 18 isprovided with a lug19. To the base member 6 are secured two clamping plates 20, these clampmgplatesbeing also d1sposed at an angle to each other, the apex of which is disposedlin the direction of the legs 9. The depending flange 18 is adapted .to move between-these clamping plates 20. Connecting the terminal. of'the arm 13 of the lever 12 with the clamping rod 17 there is a lifting rod 21, so that when the arm l3 is moved upwardly, it will raise the clamping rod17. A p
The base of'the foot member 15 is 'disposed in a position corresponding with -a similar part in a scraping machine to which the scraper. plates are normally secured and, when the resetting device is in use, the scraper 22 is disposed immediately behind this foot member, with. the lug 19 of the depending fiange 18: disposed, from the rear, "through the opening 23 in the scraper 22.
The arm 13 of the lever 12 is raised when the'scraper 22 is placedin position behind the base of'the foot'mem'ber 15,and;when the arm 13 is moveddownwardly, itdraws the clamping rod 17 forwardly, thereby forcing thesc-raper 22 against'tlie base of the foot member 15, the scraper resting on the base member 6 or being disposed. in close proximity thereto. To secure the best results, the scraper 22 is heated before 1t is placed in position between the foot member 15 and the depending flange 18 of the clamping rod 17 and while it is still hot and held in position against the base of the foot member 15, the sides of the scraper 22 are hammered down and rearwardly against the shaping plates 20 until they lie fiat against the said shaping plates. As will be seen by referring to the drawings, these shaping plates not only are disposed at angles to each other, but they are inclined rearw'ardly and upwardly, so that when the sides of the scraper 22 are hammered flat against the said plates, the scraper will be reset to its normal position, thereby permitting of the attainment of the best results when the scraper is again mounted on the machine and is in use.
To free the scraper 22 from my device, the arm 13 of the lever 12 is raised, which raises the clamping rod 17 and moves it slightly rearwardly, by which means the scraper 22 is disengaged therefrom.
I prefer to construct the horizontal member 8, the base member 6 and the transverse member 7 of wood and the other parts of my device of metal, and I also prefer to bolt the parts together as shown in the drawings, but it will be understood that these features are not material to my invention, as the parts of the device may be constructed of any suitable material and may be secured together in any firm manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a holding device for resetting scrapers, a base member, a shaping plate secured thereto, a frame secured to the base member, a foot member secured to the frame, a lever fulcrumed to the frame, a clamping rod articulated to the lower arm of the lever and extending pastthe foot member and in the direction of the shaping plate, and a depending flange on the clamping rod for engaging the face of a scraper in the direction of the shaping plate and drawing it in the direction of the foot member.
2. In a holding device for resetting scrapers, in combination with a scraper, a base member, a shaping plate secured thereto, a frame secured to the base member, a lever pivoted to the frame, a clamping rod articulated to an arm of the lever and extending in the direction of the shaping plate, and means on the clamping rod for engaging the side of the scraper in the direction of the shaping plate.
3. In a holding device for resetting scrapers, in combination with a scraper, a base member, a frame secured thereto, a foot member secured to the frame, a shaping plate secured to the base member and spaced from the foot member, a lever fulcrumed to the frame, a clamping rod articulated to an arm of the lever and extending past the foot member and in the direction of the shaping plate, and means on the clamping rod for engaging the scraper and holding it against the foot member and away from the shaping plate.
41. In a holding device for resetting scrapers, in combination with a scraper, a base member, a frame secured thereto, a foot member with an opening therethrough, secured to the frame, a shaping plate secured to the base member and spaced from the foot member, a lever fulcrumed to the frame, a clamping rod articulated to an arm of the lever and extending through the opening in the foot member and in the direction of the shaping plate, and means on the clamping rod for engaging the scraper and holding it against the foot member.
5. In a holding device for resetting scrapers, in combination with a scraper, a base member, a frame secured thereto, a foot member secured to the frame, a shaping plate secured to the base member and spaced from the foot member, a lever fulcrumed to the frame, a clamping rod articulated to an arm of the lever and extending past the foot member and in the direct-i011 of the shaping plate, the other arm of the lever .being bent so that the terminals of the arms of the lever are disposed substantially at right angles to each other, a rod connecting the said other terminal of the lever and the clamping rod, and meanson the clamping rod for engaging the scraper and holding it against the foot member with a surface of the scraper facing the shaping plate.
6. In a holding device for resetting scrapers, in combination with a scraper, a base member, a frame secured thereto, a foot member with an opening therethrough, secured to the frame, the foot member extending forwardly toward its lower end, a shaping plate secured to the base member and spaced from the foot member, a lever fulcrumed to the frame, a clamping rod articulated to an arm of the lever, disposed throu h the opening in 'the foot member and in the irection of the shaping plate, the other arm of the lever being bent so that the terminals of the arms of the lever are disposed at angles to each other, a rod connecting the said other arm of the lever and the clamping rod, and means on the clamping rod for engaging the scraper and holding it against the foot member with a surface of the scraper facing the shaping plate.
7. In a holding device for resetting scrapers, in combination with a scraper, having an opening, a base member, a frame secured thereto, a foot member with an opening therethrough, secured to the frame, a shaping plate secured to the base member and spaced from the foot member, a lever fulcrumed to the frame, a clamping rod articulated to an arm of the lever and extending through the opening in the foot member and in the direction of the shaping plate, a flange on the clamping rod, and a lug on the flange adapted to be disposed in the opening in the scraper for holding the scraper against the foot member with a surface facing the shaping plate.
8. In a holding device for resetting scrapers, in combination with a scraper having side portions, a base member, a frame secured thereto, a foot member having an opening therethrough, secured to the frame, two shaping plates disposed at angles to each other, spaced from the foot member and secured to the base member, a lever fulcrumed to the frame, a clamping rod articulated to an arm of the lever, the clamping rod extending through the opening in the foot member and in the direction of the shaping plates, and means carried by the clamping rod for engaging the scraper, with its sides facing the plates respectively.
9. In a holding device for resetting scrapers, in combination with a scraper having sides and an opening through its central portion, a base member, a frame secured thereto, a foot member having an opening therethrough, secured to the frame, two
shaping plates disposed at angles to each other, spaced from the foot member and secured to the base member, a lever fulcrumed to the frame, a clamping rod articulated to an arm of the lever and extending through the opening in the foot member and in the direction of the shaping plates, a flange secured to the clamping rod, and a lug on the flange adapted to be disposed through the opening in the scraper for holding the scraper against the foot member, with its sides facing the shaping plates respectively.
10. In a holding device for resetting scrapers, a base member, a foot member having an opening therethrough, secured to the base member, a shaping plate secured to the base member and spaced from the foot member, a lever, a clamping rod articulated to an arm of the lever and disposed through the opening in the foot member and in the direction of the shaping plate, and means on the clamping rod for engaging a scraper for holding it in place against the foot member.
