CHARLES HENRY LIKEWISE, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO NICHOLAS A. SCHNEIDER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
SAFETY-RAZOR.
specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oet. 25, 1910.
Applicationlled December 7, 1969. Serial No. 531,874.
4 improvements in safety razors having for lel sides bent inwardly and at right angles an object ytoprovide a device of this class which may be utilized in connection with a bcomb or the like.
`A further object is to provide a means for holding the blade of the razor in connection with the comb and a still further object is to provide several forms of these holding members.
Another object of my device is to provide an inexpensive article of manufacture which may be easily carried on the person and one ywhich answers a number of purposes.
v These and other objects will be more particularly referred to in the following specifcation and claims.
In the drawing forming a part of this application,Figure 1 is a plan view showing my device as it would appear connected with a comb. Fig. 2 is ay transversesectional view of the device as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view in perspective of one of the forms of blade holders.y Fig. 4 Ais a side view in perspective of a modified form of blade holder. Fig.5-is a side view in' perspective of another modified form of blade holder, and, Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of one of the forms of holders fixedly secured to a comb.
Referring to the drawings in which similar. reference numerals -designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 is a comb of the ordinary or preferred style having a vlongitudinal channel 2 eX- tending along one face of the comb, adja-v cent and above the large teeth. y
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, the blade 3 is carried by the holder 4, vsaid holder comprising a substantially U shaped' member having a portiono'f one of its paralto form La fiange 5, saidiange adapted to a guide the holder along the comb as said holder is slid thereon yby means of engagement wit-hin the channel 2. It is necessary that the holder and blade be positioned on the comb in order that the perpendicular outer edge ofthe blade will, be within the inner edge of the large tooth 6, said tooth being a gage for the position of the holder and blade and this is true of all the forms of holders which I employ. It will also be wellto state that the depth of the channel 2 is greater at the end portion and gradually.
diminishes as it extends toward the middle of the comb, the purpose of this being to afford a better gripping means 'for the kmember 5 of the holder 4.
Referring to Fig. 3, it is seen how the holder and blade, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 would appear when not in engagement with the comb. The outward bend of one side of the holder is here shown and further disclosed by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.
Referring to Fig. 4, it will be seenthat the holder 9 'is constructed of a substantially U shaped member, one side of said holder' being ibent inwardly at right angles to form aiiange 10, said flange adapted to slide in engagement with the channel 2, while the opposite parallel 4side-to the one having the flange 10 has a pair of horizontal extending ears 11 and 12, said ears being bent laterally for the purpose of engaging the blade-13.
Referring to Fig. 5, the `holder is constructed substantially the same with the eX- ception that the ears are bent inwardlyadjacent one face of the comb instead of outwardly away from the comb.
'Referring to Fig. 6, it will .be seen that the hold-er 14 is constructed of a substantially U shaped member, one of the parallel sides of said U shaped member having a flange 15 fashioned by bending a portion of the face inwardly and at right angles, while the opposite face is secured in engagement with the comb by means of a rivet 16 or the like and the blade 17 has -a collar 18 encom: passing both sides for a portion of their length, s aid collar permitting the blade to slide in engagement with the holder and comb and be rigidly held therebetween.
It will doubtless be appreciated that I have provided a cheap elicient device which may be readily utilized in connection with l a comb or any suitable object which may furnish a handle, and furthermore, that the modifications, as presented, Will disclose that it is possible to utilize a razor bladeto- `gether With a comb and thus have a safety i on said holder to retain said blade thereto, l
said holder coperating with said comb and a portion of said holder being in engagement with said channel the teeth of said comb serving as a guard for said blade.
2. The combination 'With a holder having a lateral flange thereon and a blade carried by said holder; of a handle member for said holder having a longitudinal 'groove .therein for thereception of said flange, said handle being also provided With teeth to serve as a guard for said blade, said handle With the teeth thereon also serving as a comb when unattached to said holder.
3. The combination with a holder having parallel spaced apart sides, one of said sides being provided With a lateral flange a blade, and means on the opposite lside of said holder for retaining said blade thereto; of a handle member slidably mounted between the sides of said holder, said handle having a longitudinal groove therein for the reception of said ange, said handle being also l l i i provided With teeth serving as a guard for said blade.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a handle member having a longitudinal groove in one face thereof; of a holder sliding on said handle member, said holder being provided with an infor engagement with said groove, a blade,l
and means on the opposite Wall of said holder to engage and carry said blade, said handle being provided with `teeth coperating with said blade, for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specilication in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES HENRY LIKEWISE.
