KNIFE AND NAIL-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 18, 1909.
Patented Oct. 25, 1910.
Serial No. 528,748.
1'0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS P. WIOKLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Knife and Nail-Cleaner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pencil attachments and has for an object to provide a combined pencil sharpener and finger nail cleaner attachment that when attached to the butt end of a pencil will resemble in outer appearances the-eraser bearing end of an ordinary pencil and will not add perceptibly to the weight of this end of the pencil.
A further object is to provide an attachment of this character having a reversible blade which carries a cutting ed e and a finger nail cleaner at opposite en s respectively, and having means for holding said blade so as to expose either the cutting edge or finger nail cleaner, as desired.
To attain these ends, my invention embraces the novel, details of construction and combination of arts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it bein understood that various modifications in tie minor details of construction may be made within the scope of what is claimed' In the accompanying drawing iorming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pencil e3 ipped with a pencil attachment construote my invention. Fig. 2 is a lon itudinal secent in applied osition with parts in elevation and parts iiroken away. Fi 3 is a side elevation of the penci attac ment showingv the finger nail cleaner in operative position. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the blade holding cap. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the locking wedge.
Like characters of reference designate similar parts in the views shown.
Referring to the parts by their reference characters, 5 designates a lead pencil of any referred form or construction having a ongitudinal recess 6 formed in its butt en% the pencil constitutin a casing to recei the blade, hereinafter escribed.
Engaged externally on the recessed end of the encil is a tubular member 7 one end of which is ada ted to tightly bind the outer surface of t e encil so as to prevent the rotation of the tu ular member, the opin accordance with posite end being rovided with a 10m itudinal slot 8 in its s1de wall which permits the free end of the tubular member to be sli htly expanded in order to receive the eraser earing member 9-.
The eraser bearing member is preferably formed similar in outline to the pencil 5 and is provided with an eraser 10 of the usual and well known kind. A recess 11 is formed in the end of the eraser bearing member remote from the eraser to receive the reversible blade member 12, for which the eraser bearing member constitutes a holder.
The blade member 12 is formed at one end with a cutting ed e 13 and at the opposite end with a ointed extremity 14 which c0n stitutes a nger nail cleaner. The blade is suflicien-t in size to be contained in the registering recesses 6 and 11 without terminally coining'into cont-act withthe end walls of the recesses so that the blade will not become dulled except by manual operation. 4
In order to hold the blade rigid while in operation asimpl'e locking means is provided. A cap 15 is driven upon the recessed end of the eraser bearing member and is provided with 'a transverse slot 16' in its end wall registerin with the recess 11 adapted to receive is e reversible blade 12. Th $1 1 1 te minates at one end a slight distance from the peri hery of the ca as shown at 17. Formed in the blade 2 is a notch 18 to en age the end wall 17 of the cap. A removabde wedge 19 is inserted into the slot and into the recess 11 in such a manner as to en age the opposite longitudinal edge of the lade 12 from that in which the notch 18 is formed and hold the notch of the blade in engagement with the end wall 17 of the cap, at the end of the slot 16. The blade is thus held a ainst rotation and against being accidental ydisengaged from the eraser bearing member when in operation. The wedge 19 projects from the cap a suflicient distance to be easily grasped by the fin ers of the operator to facilitate the remova of the wedge when desiring to reverse the workingB ends of the blade 12.
The tubular mom 7 being slotted l0ngi tudinally, will exan sufliciently to receive the eraser 10 so t at the pencil 5 cooperates with the eraser bearing member 9 to form an extended handle which will facilitate the manipulation of the blade member in erasing ink lines or for other purposes which require a considerable length of blade handle.
It is to be noted, upon referrin to Fig. 5, that the wedge 19 is provide with a transverse head 25 at one end, one edge of the head 25 conforming, as denoted by the numeral 26 to the periphery of the pencil 5. This transverse head 25 serves to pre vent the wed e from being forced entirely throu h the 5m 16 in the end Wall of the cap. oreover, owing to the fact that the head 25 conforms, as at 26, to the periphery of the encil 5, the tubular member 7 upon the end of the pencil 5 may slide freely over the cap 15, the tubular member 7 thus constituting a means by directing the end of the pencil 5 against the head 25 of the wedge 19, so that the Wedge may be thus forced by the end of the pencil 5, into a firm seat.
What is claimed is z 1. A device of the class described consisting of a holder having a recess in one end; a cap having-its end wall extended across the end of. the holder and having a slot alined with the recess; a blade insert-ible into the slot and into the recess and having a notch in one edge; and a wedge inserted in the slot between the other edge of the blade and the holder, to cause the end wall of the cap toregister in the notch.
2. A device of the class described consisting of a holder having a recess in one end; a cap having its end wall extended across the end of the holder, and having a slot alined with the recess; a blade insertible into theslot and into the recess and havin a notch in one edge; and a wed e inserted in the slot between the other e ge of the blade and the holder to cause the end wall of the cap to register in the notch; the
wedfe having at its outer end, a transverse hea conforming to the peri hery of the holder and engaged by the en wall of the cap.
3. A device of the class described consisting of a holder having a recess in one end; a cap having its end wall extended across the end of the holder and havin a slot alined with the recess; a blade insertlble into the slot and into the recess and having a notch in one edge; a wedge inserted into the slot between the other edge of the blade and the holder to cause the end wall of the cap to register in the notch; a casing hav-' ing a recess in one end to receive the blade;
a tube secured to the recessed end of the casingland inclosing the cap closely to direct t e end of the casin against the wedge.
4. A device of the c ass described consisting of aholder having a recess in one end; a cap having its end Wall extended across the end of the holder and having a slot alined with the recess; a blade inserted into the slot and into the recess and having a notch in one edge; a wed e inserted into the slot between the other e ge of the blade and the holder, to cause the end Wall of the cap to register in thenotch; the wedge having at its outer end, a transverse head conforming to the periphery of the holder; a casin having a recess in one end to receive the bade; and a tube secured to the recessed end of the casing and inclosing the cap closely to direct the end of the casing against the head of the wedge.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence oftwo witnesses.
LOUIS P. WIOKLAND. Witnesses:
