PAULVF. wossr, or MILwAiI EE, Wisconsin '1 PEELER Application filed January 20, 1927; SeriaINo. 162,316.
This invention relates to peelers.
In peelers, as ordinarily made, no provision is made for the sharpening of the cuttingedge, and further, it is the usual practice to provide cutting edges integral with the peeler; Necessarily, therefore, the qual ity of the steelor metal forming the blade is no better than that of the remaining portion of the peeler. It has been found from actual experiments with these devices that they very often become dull and inefiective. Further, it has been found that it is extremely difficult to sharpen the edges of the cutters.
This invention is designed to overcome the defects noted above and objects of such invention are to provide a novel form of peeler in which ordinary safety razor blades may be used, and may be detachably held in a secure and yet readily removable position, so that there is no danger to the operator and yet in which the cutting edge may be maintained at all times very sharp and serviceable.
Further objects are to provide a novel form of peeler for using safety razor blades in which provision is made for protecting the hand of the operator from contact with an edge of the blade and with the end adjacent the handle. 7
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which z- Figure 1 is a top view of the peeler;
Figure 2 is a side view thereof;
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the peeler comprises a cylindrical body portion 1 which is provided with a manipuating handle 2 in the usual manner. This body portion, however, is not provided with an integral knife, but is provided with the usual slot 3. Further, it is to be noted particularly from Figure 3, that the body portion is provided with an integral outwardly extending rest or outwardly turned part 4 against which a safety razor blade 5 is detachably held. This safety razor blade has 7 its cutting edge 6 projecting through the slot 3, as shown most clearly in Figure 3. Further, it is to be noted that a plurality of tongues 7 are formed integrallywith the body portion 1 and are hooked through the openings 8 in the razor blade 5. Further, it
is to be noted that the outer edge of the portion a isiprov'ided with a channelledor inturne'd lip 9 adapted to fit over the edge of the blade remote from the slot.
[It is to be noted furtherthat the part 4 of the body' portion is further provided with a channelled or inturned lip 10 to protect the edge of the blade adj acentthe handle. j
, In using the device, the blade is slipped through the slot and the prongs or tongues 7 are, allowed to pass through the apertures 8 in the blade. Under these conditions the upper edge of the blade is housed by the channelled lip 9 and the end adjacent the handle is housed,bythechannelled lip 10.
The blade projects slightly through the slot, ,as shown in Figure 3, and thus affords a very sharp cutting edge for the peeler. I
It is to be noted also from reference to such figure that the blade is not only supported from the portion 4, but is also supported by one edge of the slot 3 closely adjacent the active cutting edge of the blade.
If desired, a longitudinal rib 11 may be pressed into the member 1 adjacent the rear edge of the slotto provide increased stiffness for the device. This rib parallels the slot, as most clearly shown in Figure 3 of the draw- 1ng.-
If desired, the body portion may be provided with a notched or serrated edge indicated by the referencecharacter 12. This serrated edge 12 is particularly adapted for use in scaling fish, although it can be used for different purposes.
It will be seen further that the blade may be most easily detached and a new blade substituted therefor.
It has been found that a device constructed in accordance with this invention provides a. very handy peeler which has an extremely sharp cutting edge and one in which this sharp cutting edge may be readily maintained by substituting other safety razor blades, as required.
It is to be noted further that the device may be very cheaply constructed and, therefore, sold at a very small price.
Although the invention has been described in considerable detail such description is in tended as illustrative rather than limiting as the invention may be variously embodied and 5 as the scope of such invention is to be determined as claimed.
1. A peeler comprising a cylindrical body portion having a slot, a handle projecting from one end of said body ortion, an apertured blade carried by said ody portion and having an edge extending through said slot adjacent one side thereof, a plurality of tongues formed integrally with said body portion and detachably holding said blade, said body portion having channelled lips housing the edge of said blade remote from said slot and one end thereof. b a a 2. A peeler comprising a cylindrical body 0 portion having a slot and having a longitudinally extending rib paralleling said slot, a handle projecting fromone end of said body portion, an apertured bla'decarried by said body portion and having an edge extending 5 through said slot adjacent one side thereof, a plurality of tongues formed integral With said body portion and detachably holding said blade to said body portion, said body portion having channelled lips housing the so edge of said blade remote from said slot and the one end thereof.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
