Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM I). SHAT- 'rUcK, of Minneapolis, Hennepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop-Sticks, of which the following is a specification. l
The object of my invention is to provide a mop stick, having a wringer attachment, by means of which the mop cloth can be easily and quickly squeezed.
A further object is to provide a mop stick of simple, durable construction and one which can be easily operated and which will be very effective for the purpose designed.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top view of a mop embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, Fig. 3 is a side view of the mop stick, illustrating in full lines the mop withdrawn on the stick from its normal position, and in dotted lines the position assumed by the parts when the holder is passing between the lower rollers, Figs. 4 and 5 are detail views illustrating the forward and rear appearance o-f the parts when the holder is being drawn between the rollers.
In the drawing, 2 represents a handle and 3 a yoke mounted on the end thereof and having forwardly projecting arms 4, the ends of which are inwardly turned and form bearings for rollers 5 and 6, arranged substantially in line with one ano-ther with a space between them. Springs 7 are preferably coiled on the yoke 3 and carry the upper roller 8, which extends continuously across the rollers 5 and 6 from one side' of the yoke to the other and the tension of the springs 7 normally holds the rollers toward one another with a yielding pressure. Metallic guards 9 are preferably provided on each side of the wringer to prevent the mop cloth from working out at the ends of the rollers. The mop head consists of a frame l0, preferably of wire, provided with a clamping member 11 of sheet metal, between which and the cross bar of the head 10 the mop cloth 12 is securely held. The clamp plate is arranged to slide on a hinged guide 13 and is normally held in a projected position by a spring 14. The head 10 has a rearwardly projecting shank 15 secured to a slide 16 that is mounted on the handle 2 and adapted to move back and forth thereon. rI`he slide is provided on one side with a grip handle 17, to be grasped for convenience in moving the slide, said handle having preferably a hollow grip portion 18, in which a spindle of a locking member 19 is slidable, said spindle having a button 2O on one end, projecting beyond the hollow grip portion, in position to be pressed by the thumb of the operator to discngage the lock 19 from a recess 21 in the handle, allowing the mop cloth to be drawn backward through the rollers. The slide has a feather 22 thereon, which is adapted to slide in a slot 23 in the mop stick, the slot preventing the slide from turning on the stick in its movement back and forth thereon. The slide, as indicated in Fig. 2, is preferably of greater diameter at its forward end than at its rear end so that when it is unlocked and pulled backward on the stick, it will tip down and allow the locking device, when the slide is pushed forward, to clear the recess 21 and move beyond it to a point where it will enter a transverse recess 24 in the stick and permit the slide to be locked and the shank of the mop head to be inserted into the space between the lower rollers to readjust the mop to its normal working position. Uien the shank has been inserted between the rollers, the slide is drawn backward and the locking device, slipping on the surface of the stick, will drop into the socket automatically and lock the head against further backward movement until the locking device is again released.
I am aware that in many ways the details of construction of this device may be 1nodi fied and I do not, therefore, wish to be confined to the particular construction herein shown, and described.
I claim as my invention:
1. A mop stick having upper and lower rollers mounted thereon and a mop holder, a shank connected to said holder and sli dable on said stick to draw said holder between said rollers, the lower rollers being spaced apart and said mop holder being adapted to swing outwardly below said lower rollers after the wringing operation and allow said shank to return to its normal position between said upper and lower rollers.
2. A mop stick having upper and lower rollers, the latter being spaced apart, a mop holder, a shank connected to said holder, a slide connected to said shank and adapted to move back and forth on said stick, said slide being adapted to move away from said upper and lower rollers to draw said holder between them, and said slide being adapted to swing below said lower rollers and allow said shank to pass between said lower rollers to return said shank to its normal position between said upper and lower rollers.
3. A mop stick having rollers mounted thereon, a mop holder, a shank connected to said holder and slidable on said stick, said shank having a rocking movement on said stick to allow said holder to swing outwardly and clear said rollers, said rollers permitting said shank to swing inwardly between them to ret-urn said holder to its normal operative position in front of said rollers.
4. The combination, with a mop stick, of lower rollers mounted thereon and arranged in line with one another with a space between them, an upper roller bridging said space and extending lengthwise of said lower rollers and yieldingly held toward the same, a slide slidably mounted on said stick, a `mop holder carried thereby having a shank adapted to enter t-he space between said lower rollers and adapted to move back and forth on said stick, said slide having a hand grip thereon, and a locking device carried by said slide and adapted to be released by pressure of the finger, said slide being of greater diameter at its forward end than at its rear end and adapted to rock on said stick, said stem having a socket and a transverse recess to receive said locking device and permit said slide to be rocked on said stem to allow said holder, when moved forwardly, to pass beside the lower rollers.
5. A device of the class described, comprising a mop stick, lower rollers carried thereby and arranged in line with one another and spaced apart, an upper continuous roller yieldingly held toward said lower rollers, a mop holder, and a shank connected to said holder and adapted to enter the space between said lower rollers, and a slide mounted on said stick and connected with said shank, said slide being capable of rocking on said stick to allow said holder when moved forwardly to pass outside the lower rollers, whereby said shank may be moved through the space between said lower rollers and said mop holder drawn in between the upper and lower rollers, substantially as described.
6. A mop stick having oppositely arranged upper and lower rollers, the lower rollers being spaced apart, a mop holder, a shank connected to said holder, a slide adapted to move back and forth on said stick and attached to said shank, said slide having a rocking movement on said stick to allow said shank and holder to be swung outwardly to clear said rollers, and moved inwardly between the lower rollers to adjust said holder between and in front of said rollers, and means to prevent longitudinal movement of the slide'on the stick during the inward movement ofthe holder shank between the lower rollers.
7. A mop stick and rollers thereon, a mop holder, a slide mounted on said stick and operatively connected with said holder, said slide having a rocking vmovement on said stick and a spring actuated latch, and said stick having a recess and a socket to receive said latch, the rocking of said slide allowing said holder to swing outwardly and clear said rollers preparatory to its adjustment between them, and said recess receiving said latch and locking said slide against longitudinal movement on said stick during the rocking of said slide.
8. A mop stick having rollers mounted thereon, a. mop holder, a slide mounted on said stick and operatively connected with said holder, said slide having a hand grip, a latch and a thumb `piece for operating the same, said stick having a recess and a lock ing socket to receive said latch, said slide being capable of locking on said stick to swing said holder outwardly, said recess receiving said latch to Vlock said slide during its rocking movement, and said socket receiving said latch and locking said slide during the mopping operation.
