MOP-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,295, dated February 2, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN MoWILLIAMs, of New Lebanon, in the county of Columbia and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Mop-Holde1-, of which the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description.

The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved mop-holder, which is simple in construction, strong and durable, and adapted to hold mops of different sizes.

The invention consists in a mop-holder constructed in the manner that will be fully described and set forth hereinafter.

The invention also consists in the combination,with the mop-holder, of a rod hinged on the stick, and a forked piece swiveled on the end of the rod, which forked piece is used for wringing the mop.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 is a front view of my improved mop holder. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.

On the end of the stick or pole A a crosspicce, B, is held, which is provided in its outer edge with a longitudinal groove, G, and which orosspiecc has its ends forked, as indicated in Fig. 1. A strong U-shaped wire, 1), is placed above-the groove .in the crosspiece, the shanks of the wire 1) being passed through the forked ends of the cross-piece. The ends of the wire D are pivotally connected with the ends of a cross-bar, E, having a handlelug, F. From the inner side of the bar E two pins, G, project through apertures in a short piece, H, held by a clip, I, on the stick or pole in such a manner that the piece H can turn more or less on its longitudinal axis. Heads J are formed 011 the ends of the pins G, beyond the piece H, and spiral springs K are wound around the pins G, between the piece H and bar E. A U'shaped piece, L, is swiveled on the end of a rod, M, pivoted between lugs N on the stick. A spring-catch, O, is se cured on the stick A, for the purpose of holding the rod M against the stick.

The operation is as follows: The handle-lug F is swung in the direction of the arrow a, Fig. 2, whereby the cross-piece of the wire D is moved from the cross-piece B, thus permitting of placing the mop P between the cross piece B and the wire D. The hand1e-1ug Fis then swung in the inverse direction of the arrow a against the stick or pole A, whereby the wire D is moved toward the cross-piece B and presses part of the mop into the groove 0. The mop is thus held firmly and securely,and the holding device cannot become loosened accidental v,as the cross-piece of the wire D,the pivot ends of the said wire, and the pivot part of the piece H are not in a right line.

The device can only be opened by exerting sufficient force to move the handle-lug F from the stick or pole to such an extent as to bring the ends of the wire D above the fulcrum of the locking device,that isabove the pivot part of the piece H.

Thick or thin mops may be held, as may be desired. \Vhen thick or bulky mops are held, the springs K are compressed more and the cross-bar E moved nearer the piece H than when thin mops are held.

To wring the mop, the rod M is swung over to project beyond the cross-piece B, holding the mop, and the mop is passed through the U-shapcd piece L, and the doubled ends held together by means of one hand,and by means of the other hand the U-shaped piece L is turned on the end of the rod M, on the longitudinal axis of said rod, whereby the mop is twisted together and the water is expelled.

\Vhen the wringing device is not in use, it is swung back against the pole or stick, and held against the same bylhe spring-catch 0.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the pole or stick A, of the crosspiece B, the U-shaped wire 1), the cross-bar E. having its ends connected with the ends of the wire D, the pins G, projecting from the cross-piece E, the piece H, pivoted on the stick,and through which piece the pins G are passed, and of springs K,sur-

rounding the pins G, between the piece Hand 5 the cross-picce 1*],substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with a stick, of a mopholding device on the stick, a rod hinged on the stick, and a U-shaped piece swiveled on the free end of the rod, substantially as herein shown and described.
