To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that I, lJOSEPH TonANGo, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a full and clear specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the improved box; Fig. 2 a Vertical lon itudinal section thereof on the line 2 2 o Fig. 4; Fig. 3 a horizontal section on the line 33 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a transverse vertical sec tion on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2; and Figs. 5,- 6, and 7 detail views described in the course of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a very stron and durable box for use in handling varlous articles of merchandise, it being especially intended and adapted for use as a substitute for the straw-board boxes and willow baskets now generally employed by bakers and others for delivering bread and other merchandise.

Referring to the drawings by referencecharacters a designates four corner posts, to which the bottom and vertical walls are fastened. The bottom of the box consists of a series of longitudinal runner boards I) to which are nailed the transverse slats c composing the bottom proper of the box, these slats being arranged in pairs and fastened one upon the other by rivets d, these rivets passing through both thicknesses of the slats and through intermediate thin metallic straps e running longitudinally the full length of the bottom and carried up through the end walls in the manner hereinafter set forth. The bottom is further braced by inside battens or strips f nailed down upon the slats c and through the runners b.

The two ends walls of the box are constructed alike, each consisting of a trans verse bottom rail g and a transverse top rail h and intermediate slats vl each constructed of two layers lfastened together byrivets j in the same manner as the slats of the bot-- tom. The rails h and g and the slats i are of course fastened rigidly to the corner posts. The metallic straps e after they emerge from between the slats composing the bottom are bent downwardly around the lower edges of the rails g and upwardly upon the outer faces thereof and thence up- Speccation of Letters Patent.

upper extremities terminating in rabbets formed in the inner lower edges of the top rails h. The extremities lying in these rabbets are clamped in place and completely covered and protected by filling slats c, which fit the rabbets and are nailed rigidly to the rails h. By this manner of constructing the bottom and the end walls of the pairs of slats and of tying them all together by metallic straps extending the full length of the bottom and up through the slats composing the end walls a very rigid wellbraced structure is obtained. A feature of importance is the manner of carrying up the end portions of the metallic straps and embedding their extremities, so to speak, in the top rails of the end walls.

The side walls are constructed substantially like the end walls, being each composed of a bottom rail Z, a top rail m and intermediate slats n arranged in pairs and fastened together by rivets 0. These rails and slatsare all tied together by thin metallic straps p which are clamped between the slats a and have their extremities clamped in rabbets in the inner faces of the rails Z and m by means of filling-slats g, similar to the lling-slats 7c. In this manner each'side wall is a rigid structure, all its rails and slats being tied together by the metallic straps, and the extremities of these straps being embedded in the top and bottom rails. These side walls are nailed to the corner posts and to the bottom.

A suitable cover 7 hinged to one of the side walls is employed and in connection therewith a suitable latching device s to hold the cover closed is used. At each corner of the box suitable.` thin metallic corner straps p are employed to fasten the walls together and thus strengthen and brace the box. For the purposes of clear illustration there is a space shown between the pairs of slats in Figs. 8 and 4 but it will be understood that in practice the metallic straps e and p shall be sufficiently thin to permit the companion slats to become closely into contact throughout their length when they are riveted together, this close contact being permitted by the embedding of the metallic straps in the adjacent surfaces of the slats,

A box structure consisting of inner corner posts, a bottom attached thereto,l end Walls attached to the bottom and to the Corner posts, side Walls attached to the bottom and corner posts and each consisting of a top rail rabbeted along its inner face, a bottom rail similarly rabbeted, intermediate slats arranged in pairs, vertical metallic straps lying between the pairs of slats and lhaving extremities lying insaid rabbets, rivets passing through the pairs of slats and the intermediate metallo straps, and filling pieces o r slats fastened in said rabbetsalid inclosing and sealing the extremities of the metallic straps.
