FIG. 2-
FFTQE.
CHARLES GERENCIER, OF NORTHAMPTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
CUSPIDOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1910.
Application filed July 16, 1910, Serial No. 572,268.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GERENCIER, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Northampton, in the county of North ampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to cuspidors, and the objects of my invention are to provide positive and reliable means in connection with a cuspidor for preventing the contents thereof from being spilled when the cuspidor is accidentally tilted or upset, and to provide a cuspidor that can be advantageously used in depots, hotels, theaters, and public places where cuspidors are liable to be upset and the contents thereof injure the carpet or floor.
Further objects of my invention are to provide a sanitary cuspidor that can be easily and quickly cleaned, and to provide a cuspidor that is strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacure.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the mechanical construction to be hereinafter specifically described and claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a cuspidor in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same taken on the line IIII of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings 1 denotes a frusto-conical-shaped receptacle having a fiat bottom 2 and the upper end thereof provided with an integral funnel-shaped inouth-piece 3, this mouth-piece at the upper edge of the receptacle 1 being provided with an inwardly projecting annular flange 4 upon which is mounted an annular resilient gasket or washer 5.
The upper edges of the funnel-shaped mouth-piece 3 are reamed or provided with a wire edge 6 and pivotally connected to the edge 6, as at 7, are a plurality of spring pressed clasps 8 adapted to engage the upper reamed edge 9 of an outer funnel 10, said funnel being supported within the mouthpiece 3 by a plurality of uprights 11 having the lower ends thereof soldered or otherwise connected, as at 12, to an annular flange 13, carried by the upper end of an' inner funnel 14 mounted upon the gasket or washer 5. The funnel 14 extends into the receptacle 1 and into proximity to the bottom thereof. The upper end of the funnel 1 1 is provided with a conical-shaped crate or screen, consisting of a plurality of diverging wires or rods 15 having the-lower ends thereof connected to the flange 13, while the upper ends are soldered or otherwise connected to a conical-shaped deflector 16 arranged within the crate or screen, the lower end of the deflector 16 being of a less diameter than the upper end of the inner funnel 1 1-, and the lower edges of the deflector are scalloped or cut away, as at 17.
Solid matter deposited in the upper funnel 10 is prevented from entering the receptacle 1 by the grate or screen, and liquid matter deposited in the upper funnel 1O impinges the deflector 16 and is carried into the lower funnel 14. The lower funnel 14 in conjunction with the walls of the receptacle 1 provides an annular compartment 18 in the upper part of said receptacle, into which the contents of the receptacle are adapted to flow when the cuspidor is accidentally tilted or upset.
By detaching the upper funnel 10, the lower funnel 1 1, grate or screen, and deflector 16 can be easily removed from the cuspidor and cleansed.
The cuspidor is made of light and durable metal, as brass and can be made of various sizes and shapes.
WVhat I claim, is:
A cuspidor embodying a receptacle, a funnel-shaped mouth-piece carried thereby and provided with an inwardly projecting annular flange, a gasket mounted upon said flange, an upper funnel detachably connected to the upper edges of said funnelshaped mouth-piece, a lower funnel extending into said receptacle and having the upper edges thereof provided with an annular flange adapted to rest upon said gasket,

CHARLES GERENGTER.
