GLASS-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 18, 191%).
Application filed May 18, 1910. Serial No. 561,989.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND A. STRAUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvement-s in Glass flolders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to drinking glass holders such as are usually employed when serving customers at soda fountains, and it is the object of my invention to produce an open bottomed holder for the glass which will prevent overflows from the glass or holder dripping onto a customers garment when in use, thus preventing injury thereto.
I accomplish this object by means of the,
device described herein, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a vertical central section taken through a cup holder constructed according to my invention, and showin a cup within the holder. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1, with the glass removed.
Referring particularly to'the parts, 3 represents the body of the holder open atboth ends, which is in the form of a bottomless cup of subconical form, the lower end of the bottomless cup being clenched inwardly and upwardly so as to form an annular groove or channel 4. The upper end of the holder is flared so as to form a lip or enlar ed mouth 5, which facilitates the insertion of a glass 6. Thislip 5 also 0 erates to catch dripping's which run down rom the upper edge of the glass. The interior face of the body 3 is formed with longitudinally disposed channels or guide grooves 7 down which drippings from the upper part of the mouth 5 are guided into the groove or channel 4.
It will seem that in forming the annular groove 4, the interior of the cup holder presents an upperly extending flange 8, and the rounded bottom edge 9 of the glass holder forms a seat adapted to rest upon the counter or table. The cup holder is provided with a handle 10, of anysuitable construction.
When the glass 6 is seated in the cup holder, the bottom 11 of the glass will be slightly above the upper edge of the flange 8, so that any drops on thebottom of the glass will run across the bottom 11, when the glass is tilted as in drinking, and these drops will then fall into an annular groove 4 as will be readily understood. In other words, with the preferred size of holder the bottom 11 should not touch the edge of the flange 8, as this would cut off the annular groove and prevent its operating in the manner just described.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is;
1. A glass holder having a body with a circular bottom opening, said body being adapted to support a glass therein and hav ing an interior lateral annular flange at the base thereof forming the edge of said bottom opening and adapted to catch the drippings from the glass held in said device.
2. A glass holder having a body of subconical form with a circular central opening at the lower end thereof, said body having an annular inwardly and upwardly projecting flange forming the edge of said opening and forming a drip groove.
3. A glass holder having a substantially conical bod with a lip formed at the upper end thereo adapted to catch dri pings descending on the upper surface of the glass, an annular cup formed at the base of said holder adapted to retain drippings, and means for guidin the drippings from said lip into said annu ar groove.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 12th day of May, 1910.
EDMUND A. STRAUSE.
