Description
R. H. STRONAOH. SAFETY DEVICE FOR HORSES.
APPLIGATION FILED JUNE 13, 1910.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910:
SAFETY DEVICE FOR HORSES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Bins H. STRoNAoi-i, a citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Roxbury, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Horses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to harness and particularly to safety devices adapted to be carried by the bridle of a horse in such a manner that should the latter become fractions, a pressure will be applied on the reins, thereby closing the animals nostrils.
lVith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view illustrating the device forming the subject-matter of the present invention applied to a horse; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a top plan view, parts thereof being broken away.
Reference being had to the drawings 10 indicates a supporting strap carried by the brow-band 11 of a bridle. At the lower terminal of the supporting strap is a transverse nose-band or strap 12, said nose strap being secured by the loops 14 to the bridle or bit rings 15. The rivet 13, securing the supporting strap 10 to the nose band or strap 12, forms a pivotal connection for the elements of the present invention, said ele ments being superposed above each other.
The choking elements comprise a pair of U-shaped members, each U-shaped member having one corner of the base 16 thereof secured to the rivet 13, the upper arms 17 of said U-shaped members extending laterally above the nose band 12 and carrying in the terminals thereof the rings 18 to which are secured the auxiliary reins 19 which are detachably fastened to the main or driving reins 20. The lower arms 21 of the U- shaped member extend laterally below the Specification of Letters Patent.

nose band 12, and are adapted to conform with the contour of the horses nose resting against the latter directly over the nostrils. By this construction it will be understood that when an exceptionally hard pull is exerted on the reins 20, the arms 17 will be drawn toward the nose band 12, thus forcing the members 21 into the horses nose, thereby shutting off his Wind.
A leaf-spring 22 is interposed between the lower terminals of the base portion 16 of the U-shaped elements and is secured there to, being adapted to normally retain the members 21 from bearing into the animals nostrils.
Having thus fully described my invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. The combination with a bridle, of a supporting strap carried thereby, a nose band carried by said supporting strap connected at its terminals to the bit rings of the bridle, and a plurality of choking members pivotally secured to said nose band adapted to be operated by the driving reins of the bridle.
2. The combination with a bridle, of a supporting strap carried thereby, a nose band carried by the lower terminal of said supporting strap connected at the terminals to the bit rings of the bridle, a pair of U- shaped members pivotally connected to said nose band adapted to conform to the contour of a horses nose, one arm of the U- shaped member adapted to force the remain ing arm into the animals nostrils, auxiliary straps connecting said U-shaped members to driving reins, and a spring interposed between and rigidly secured to the choking portions of the U-shaped members and adapted to normally retain the same from closing the animals nostrils.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
REIS H. STRONACH.
