To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVALTER J ONES, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at White Castle, in the parish of Iberville and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Conveyor- Cleats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to cleats for endless conveyers of that class which are composed of chains having transverse cleats or cross bars connected with links thereof at suitable intervals, and one object of the invention is to provide a cleat of simple and improved construction which may be readily connected with or detached from the chain links.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and efficient conveyer cleat which shall be held very securely against lateral movement.
Still further objects of the invention are to simplify and improve the general construction and operation of a device of the character outlined above.
With these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same con sists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, and in said drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a portion of a chain, one link of which is equipped with the improved conveyer cleat. Figs. 9. and 3 are perspective detail views, showing the members of which the improved device is composed detached from each other. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line 44 in Fig. 1.
The improved conveyer cleat is composed of two parts or members designated, respectively, A and B. The bottom member A is composed of a plate 5 of suitable dimensions having a front wall 6 extending approximately one-half the length of said plate adjacent to one end thereof. The top member B consists of a plate 7, the dimensions of which are equal to those of the plate 5 upon which it is superposed, said plate being provided with a front wall 8 extending one-half the length thereof and combining with the front wall 6 of the bottom member A to constitute the engaging portion of the cleat Specification of Letters Patent.

proper. The front wall 8 is extended below the plate 7 to form a ridge 9 of a height equal to the thickness of the bottom plate A. The top plate 7 is provided with a hump or enlargement 10 located about centrally intermediate the ends thereof, said hump having a groove or channel 11 adapted to engage one side member of a link 12; the wall portion 6 of the member A is provided with a notch 13 for the passage of the side member of the link, and the wall portion 8 of the member B is correspondingly notched at 14 for the same purpose. The plates 5 and 7 are provided with apertures 15 for the passage of connecting members such as screws 16.
The parts of the device are so proportioned that when the top and bottom members are assembled, as shown in Fig. 1, the distance bet-ween the bottom of the groove 11 and the underside of the bottom plate 5 shall be approximately equal to the distance between the side members of the link 12 in connection with which the improved cleat is to be used. When the parts are thus assembled, one of the side members of the link will be partially accommodated in the groove 11, and said link member will extend through the aperture formed by the notches 13 and 14 in the abutting ends of the wall members 6 and 8. The rib or flange 9 cooperates with the bottom plate 5 to form a flush under surface. The parts when properly assembled, as shown in Fig. 1, may be connected by the screws or fastening mem bers 16, thereby preventing all possibility of lateral displacement or any detachment from the link until the fastening members have been removed.
The parts of the device, as will be seen from the foregoing description, are few and simple, and the device may be inexpensively constructed of cast iron or other suitable material. hen properly made and applied it will form a simple, durable and highly eflicient cleat for conveyers of various kinds, it being proof against accidental displacement or detachment, and the parts being braced and reinforced in such a manner that breakage or injury will not be liable to occur.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A conveyer cleat comprising a bottom member having an upstanding wall portion extending approximately one-half the length thereof, a top member having a mating upstanding wall portion extending approximately one-half the length thereof, said wall portions being notched at their meeting edges for the passage of the chain link therebetween, and means for connecting the top and bottom plates with the upstanding wall portions abutting endwise.
2. A conveyer cleat comprising a bottom member having an upstanding wall portion extending approximately one-half the length thereof, a top member having a grooved link engaging hump disposed midway between the ends thereof and an upstanding wall portion extending approximately onehalf the length thereof, the wall portions of the top and bottom members being provided at their meeting edges with link engaging notches, and means for connecting the top and bottom plates.
3. A conveyer cleat comprising a top member having a downwardly extending ridge and an upwardly extending wall portion, said ridge and wall portion extending about one-half the length thereof, and a bottom member having a mating upstanding wall portion, said Wall portions of the top and bottom members being provided with link engaging notches in their meeting edges, and means for connecting said top and bottom members together.
4. A conveyer cleat comprising a top member having a downwardly extending ridge and an upwardly extending wall portion, said ridge and wall portion extending approximately one-half the length thereof, said top member being also provided with a grooved link engaging hump midway between the ends thereof, a bottom member having a mating upstanding wall portion extendingapproximately one-half the length thereof, said wall portions being provided with link engaging notches in their meeting edges, and means for separably connect- VALTER JONES.
