Description

ESAU D. TAYLOR AND DAVID COHN, HORNELLSVILLE'NEW YGRK.
luletlcrs Patent .N 97,245, dated Notemlbe/r 23, 1869.
IMPROVED CLOTHES-MANG-LE.
The Schedule referred to m these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
'l'o all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that w'e,EsAU D. TAYLOR and DAVID GOHN, of Horuellsville, in thc county of Steuben, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mangles for Ironing Clothes, Bed and 'Table-Linen;..aml the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,- making a part' of this specilication, in which Figure 1 represents a face side elevation ofthe machine, showing the gear-wheelsand the yielding springmechanism, with the crank for operating.,
Figure 2 shows a section through the maugle-rollers and' crowning-table.
Figure 3 represents a plan or top view of the machine.
Our invention relates to a class of labor-saving mechanism for ealendering and smoothing textile fabrics, by passing them between yieldinglpressure-rollers; and
It consists in the arrangement of the crowning guidetablc, the angular frames for the journal-boxes, and series of presser-rolls, combined to operate 'so as to vdraw ,the fabric straight on the upper surface, and
prevent creases and wrinkles in ironing or smoothing.
That others may be enabled to make and use our improved mangle or ironing-machine, we will describe it more iii detail. A
rlhe table Amay be made of any desired form and dimensions, plain or ornamental, 4and can be used as a table for various other purposes; or the length of the calenders a a a' may be such that the machine may be fitted to, andV used on a common kitchen-table, thereby dispensing with a table or stand made expressly for it.
The crowning'guide-table or base B lays iiat on the top of the table Atheangular frames O C being secured to the sides ofthe base B. 4
The edges c c proj ect below sniiicient to form guides,
and the machine is held firmly ou .the tablebythe clamping-screws b b.
lhe angular frames C G may he -made ot hard wood or of cast-metal, with the openings d l for the yielding journal-boxes e e and springs f f, the two vupper calemler-rollers ct a, being pressed toward the centre of the lower or driving-roller a, which is embedded nearly in the crowning guide-table B, so that the article to be pressed or ironed enters between the rollers on a line with the incline on one side, and comes out on the line of the incline on the other side, thus drawing ou the upper side and straightening the'fabric, so that no wrinkles are liable tobe pressed in.
The calender-rollers a a a' may be made of hard Wood or of metal, solid or hollow,.and used cold -or heated by steam or otherwire, they all being provided A with cog-wheels hij, so that their motion is positive, there being'no slipping to strain', injure, or tear the fabrics. l
rIhe advantages of our arrangement of calenderrollers, as above described, are, that the crowning gnide-table, whose incline planes are inline with the square ot' the top rolls, drawou the upper surface of the fabric, and make it more even and smooth than when. it is passed through in a direct line.
What we claim'I as our invention,l and desire tosccure by Letters Patent, is l The arrangement of the crowning guide-table or base B, the angular journal-box frames O O, and a series of calender-rollers a (i a', all combined to operate as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony whereof, we hereunto subscribe our names, in the presence of- ESAU D. TAYLOR.
DAVID COHN.
