UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ITHIEL J. OILLEY, OF LAMONT, AND LEWIS A. WRIGHT AND THEODORE NELSON, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING AND WRINGING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,8 [8 dated December 7, 1875; application filed September 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, ITHIEL J. GILLEY, of Lamont, Ottawa county, Michigan, and LEWIS A. WRIGHT and THEODORE N ELsoN, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, have invented a Washer and Wringer, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention relates to the construction of a washer and wringer by means of adjustable rollers, so arranged, in combination with levers, treadles, and crank, as to give perfect control over the degree of pressure brought upon the clothing passed between the rollers, and to accommodate the rollers to any quantity or thickness of fabric passed between them, and answering the double purpose of washer and wringer.
In the drawing, A represents the upper roller; A, the roller-slide, attached together, by a spring-bearing or similar device, in such a manner that the washing-roller may be readily substitutedby a rubber or other roller for wringing purposes. Roller-slide A works in grooves L of frame K, and is attached by means of a loop to a pin near the center of lever B. D is the under roller, of wood or other suitable material, corrugated or otherwise, for washing, having crank M attached to its shaft by screw-socket or similar device. N is a slot in frame K, for the purpose of removing roller D and supplying its place with a rubber or other roller, S, for wringing purposes; or the slot may be omitted, and the end of the shaft of roller D may be left flush with the end of the roller, so that by unscrewing the crank the roller D is readily removed, and its place supplied by a roller for wringing purposes. E is a treadle, attached to lever B by cord or its equivalent, for the purpose of regulating the pressure of roller A upon the fabrics passing between the rollers,
- either for washingor wringing. IF is a bench for tub, having standard G, which supports roller-frame K at any desired height above the tub, and may, by bolts or their equivalents, be raised or lowered, to accommodate the height of the washer-frame K to the size and height of the tub used. 0 is a hinge, supporting washerframe K upon standard G in such a manner that, when desired, the washer is thrown upward and backward, leaving the tub upon the bench ventirely unobstructed.
The great advantage of this machine over other washers and wringers is that the pressure of roller A is governed entirely and instantaneously by the treadle E, and when the slide-loop is attached to the lever-pin the upper roller may be instantly raised to accommodate the starting in of any thickness of fabric. As a wringer, with foot upon the treadle, it adjusts itself instantly to all parts of fabrics having a variety of thicknesses.
When the upper washing-roller is made smooth, to transform this washer into a wringer it is only necessary to supply the place of roller D with a rubber roller, S, though, where desired, both rollers of rubber may be made instantly to supply the place of the washing-rollers.
We prefer, for both washing and wringing, that the same upper roller of wood be used, supplying only the place of the lower or corrugated roller D with the rubber roller, the upper roller of wood being much more desirable and efiicacious than rubber (as we believe) for any wringer.
What we claim to have invented, and desire patented, is-
1. A washin g-machine, above described, havin g frame K, with slots L for roller-slide A, and slot N for lower bearing, hinge G, and movable standard G, in combination with adjustable rollers A and D, roller-slide A, lever B, treadle E, and bench F I, for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the frame K, having the open slot or bearing N, with the rollers A S, adjusted by the slide A, as and for the purpose described.
