Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Application filed August 21, 1909. Serial No. 513,955.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILGHMAN GRAHAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Worth, county of Tarrant, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post-Cards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to advertising devices and particularly to advertising devices which may be used as post cards, and the object is to provide novel and useful and unique devices which can be used for souvenirs or advertising cards which will attract attention by the action of certain mechanical elements.
Other objects and advantages will be fully explained in the following description and the invention will be more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application and specification.
Figure 1 is a back view of the device, folded and fastened closed. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 3 shows the device partly open, illustrating how a picture or other sheet may be folded within the covers. Fig. 1 is a back view of a card, showing a variation. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the same. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the attaching disk.
Similar characters. of reference are used to indicate the same parts throughout the several views.
The card herein shown may have the usual face with suitable spaces for the address and other matter. The body portion 1 is made of card board or of some resilient material. The face of the card is on the body portion. The card is provided with folding flaps 2 and 3 which are hinged to the body portion at 4:. Marginal strips 12 are attached to the outer edges of the body portion 1. These marginal strips form convenient members for hinging the flaps 2 and 3 to the post card. The card is provided with elastic straps or cords 5 for automatically opening the flaps. This is accomplished by attaching the straps or cords 5 to the free edges of the flaps and to the outer edges of the body portion 1. The flaps 2 and 3, being hinged to the body 1 at a margin from the edge, have a leverage for opening the flaps and as soon as the free edges of the flaps are released, the cords open the flaps at once to substantially the positions shown in Fig. 5. This exposes the interior of the flaps and also the interior of the body portion. Pictures of any suitable character, whether souvenirs, or advertising matter can be mounted on the interior faces of the flaps and body portion, or printed matter could be placed on these faces. Sheets 6 of several folds may be attached to the interior faces of the flaps, as shown in Fig. 3, and a series of pictures or panorama can be placed on the folding sheet.
A disk 7 may be used to retain the flaps closed. This disk 7 is attached to one flap, as flap 3, and extends far enough over flap 2 to hold the same closed. The disk 7 has ears 8 and 9. One of the straps 5 is placed on the outside of the ear 9 and extends under the disk to the rivet which holds the disk to the body of flap 3. The other strap 5 is placed on the outside of ear 8 and is attached to the free edge of the flap 2. The flaps are thus held closed. A pull thong or strap 10 may be attached to the disk 7. A pull on the thong will release the disk 7 from the strap 5 because the ear 8 is drawn from under the strap. The flaps will then open automatically. Elastic bands 11 may be used to hold the folding sheet 6 and its strap together. The disk 7 can be turned slightly by reason of the fact that the straps 5 are elastic. The dotted outlines in Fig. 1 illustrate the positions to which the disk 7 may be turned. The flaps are secured folded by passing the ear 8 under the strap 5. The disk 7 may also be used as an advertising device, as shown in Fig. 6.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. A post card having a body portion provided with a face for the address, marginal strips attached to the outer edges of the body portion, folding flaps hinged at the inner edges of the said marginal strips, elastic straps for automatically opening said flaps attached to the free edges of said flaps and to the outer edges of said body portion, and means for fastening the free edges of said flaps in line with each other at their meeting edges.
2. A post card having a body portion, flaps attached thereto and hinged thereto and foldable thereon, elastic cords attached to the free edges of said flaps and to the outer edges of said body portion for automatically opening said flaps, and a disk attached to one of said flaps and having ears adapted to engage said straps and hold said flaps closed.
3. A post card having a body portion and margins thereon, flaps hinged to said body portion at the inner edges of said margins and foldable on said body portion, elastic straps attached to the outer edges of said body aortion t0 the free edges of said flaps, and toldable sheets attached to the inner 10 faces of said flaps and a holding member I carried by one of said flaps and engaging the cord of the other flap.
