GAPPED GEAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 11, 1910.
Application filed August 22, 1910. Serial No. 578,264.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILLARD T. SEARs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, Philadelphia county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gapped Gears, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to gears provided with a gap extending through the rim inwardly, such gears being frequently employed in lathes designed for the turning of car wheels while on their axles, the driving apparatus, including a gapped gear, surrounding the axle between the wheels, and the present invention relates to the system by which the gap is opened and closed.
The present invention will be readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a face elevation of a gapped gear exemplifying my present invention: and Fig. 2 is a plan of a portion of the releasing lever.
In the drawing :1, indicates the rim of the gear: 2, the hub: 3, the gap extending through the rim and inwardly: 4, the patch adapted to bridge the gap in the rim: 5, tail-bars extending from one end of the patch and straddling the rim at one side of the gap: (3, a pivot connecting the ends of the tail-bars with the gear and forming a hinge on which the patch makes its opening and closing motions: 7, a releasing lever pivoted to the patch and extending inwardly through the rim of the gear: 8, a spring tending to force the lever toward hingepivot 6: 9, a latch-tooth carried by the releasing lever and adapted to engage a latching shoulder on the gear when the patch is in open position as shown in the drawing: 10, a fixed pin disposed in the path of the free end of releasing lever 7: 11, the end portion of the releasing lever, being the portion of the lever which engages pin 10: 12, a latch-hook projecting from the inner portion of the patch: 13, a latch-lever mounted on the gear at that side of the gap opposite the one to which the patch is hinged: 14, a hook on this latch-lever adapted to cooperate with latch-hook 12 of the patch: 15, a
' spring serving to press hook 14 toward hinge-pivot 6: 16, a stop carried by the gear to limit the movement of latch-lever 13 in latching direction when the patch is in open position: 17 a cam-arm carried by latchlever 13: and 18, a fixed pin in position to engage the cam-arm as the gear turns in non-clockwise direction and shifts hook 14 to disengaging position.
Assume the patch to be closed and held in that position by hook 14 engaging latchhook 12. In the course of the turning of the gear, in non-clockwise direction, fixed pin 18 will be engaged by cam-arm 17, result-- ing in the release of latch-hook 12 from hook 14. At this time the rotation of the gear is to cease, and the patch may now be lifted to open position, whereupon the engagement of tooth 9 with its shoulder holds the patch in open position, as shown in the drawing. hen the gear again rotates in non-clockwise direction, the end of releasing lever 7 is engaged by fixed pin 10, the result being that releasing lever 7 has its tooth 9 disengaged, whereupon the patch drops to closed position and becomes latched as before.
I claim 1. A. gapped gear comprising, a gear having a gap extending through its rim and inwardly, a patch hinged to the gear and adapted to bridge the gap in the rim, a releasing lever carried by the patch, a latch carried by the releasing lever and adapted to sustain the patch in open position, and a fixed part adapted to be engaged by the releasing lever while the gear is turning and to release the latch thereof to permit the patch to go to closed position, combined substantially as set forth.
2. A gapped gear comprising, a gear having a gap extending through its rim and inwardly, a patch hinged to the gear and adapted to bridge the gap in the rim, a releasing lever carried by the patch, a latch carried by the releasing lever and adapted to sustain the patch in open position, a fixed part adapted to be engaged by the releasing lever while the gear is turning and to release the latch thereof to permit the patch to go to closed position, a latch carried by the gear at the side of the gap opposite that patch to be moved to open position, com- :Lt which the patch is lcliingled, a1 latch-hook billed substantially as set forth.
carried by the oat-ch an a aptec to 006 )erw 1 ate with the la st-mentioned latch when the TILLARD bLAhb' patch is in closed position, and a fixed part \Vitnesses: adapted to release the last-mentioned latch R. RAYMOND PORTER, while the gear is turning and to permit the CHARLES \V. AmusoN.
