To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it known that we, Tnnononn Marxann and DAVID E. LAIN, citizens of the United States, and residents of Bellingham, m the county of hatcom and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-Jar Covers, of which the following is a s ecification.

Qur invention rc ates to an improvement in fruit jar covers, which with the special form of al' used, consists in certain shapes and proportionsof related parts such that the jar can be easily cleaned, firmly seated, either end up, on an irre lar surface, safely packed close together, quickly and effectively sealed, entirely emptied of air at the time of sealing, and easil opened. The means by which we accomp ish these desirable objects are illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawin which forms a part of this application, in which similar characters refer to similar parts in the different views, and in which- Figure 1 is a partly sectionahzed elevation of our improved jar; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cover and Fig. 3 a plan view of the bottom of said jar with a portion omitted for lack of space.

More specifically: 1 is the cylindrical body of the jar, '2 the bottom, 3 an exterior, annular rib or flange around the upper end of said cylindrical body, 4 is the. cover, 4' an annular rib on the lower side of said cover which, together with a part of the dome shaped bottom side of the same, lies below the top of the jar and displaces enough liquid from a full jar to cause some of the same to flow out of vent l0; 5, 5, 5, are three on the top of said cover, 6, (i, (i, are three bosses on the lower surface of said bottom, 7 is a segmental boss on the top of said cover; 8 is a sealin disk partly encompassed by said nenta boss, shown as partly omitted in ig. 2, 9 is a. spring clip for temporarily retaining said cor'er on said jar, 10 1s a venthole through said cover located within said segmental boss, 11 is a sealing ring or gasket, and 12 is an annular boss having an obtuse-angled lower surface on the lower side of the rim of said cover.

As shown, the jar is made with plain, cylindrical body of such diameter that the hand can be readily inserted therein for the pur se of cleanin the same or packing fruit therein. The Eottom is preferably flat or concavcd outwardly and is joined to the 'This permits of the easy and safe body in an easy curve, which is suited for easy cleaning, the three bosses 6, 6, 6, on the bottom give sufiicient stability and permit of greater accommodation to irregular surface than is the case with the bottom of the ordinary jar, the annular rib 3 adds strength to the rim of the jar, affords a finger hold when carrying the same, and further affords a hold for the retaining clip 9. The rib 3 is of such size relatively to therounded corner of the bottom of the jar that when an uncovered jar is inverted and placed by the side of a jar standing on its bottom, as shown in dotted out-line at 1. the rib 3 doesnot touch the bottom of the neighboring jar. packing of the empty jars for shipment.

The obtuse-angle shape of the lower surface of the rim 12 of the cover 4 is more effective in securing a tight seal of said jar than if said surface were flat or rounded as is usual. The vent 10 in the lid 4: permits the escape of air when said lid is being placed on the completely filled jar, while rib 1', together with the crowned bottom of said cover, enters below the surface of the liquid in the top of said jar, displacing a quantity of the same and causing it to pass upward through vent 10 to the complate expulsion of air from the bottom of said cover and the top of said liquid. The se mental boss 7 localizes the sea-1mg disk 8, w ile the openin in the same permits the easy overflow of quid over the cover from vent 10, and also permits the easy introduction of an instrument undo-r sealing disk 8 when it is desired to admit air into vent 10 in order to easily open a sealed jar.

In using this jar it is filled so that the liquid comes to the top of the same, the sealing ring 11 is placed over rib 4, which is of a size to retain said ring, the lid 4, with the vent 10 open, is then quickly placed on the top of the jar when, because of the displacement of liquid by the rib 4', all the air tween said cover and said liquid will be carried upward through said vent together with a small quantity of said liquid. The disk 8 is then uickly placed over the vent 10 and within t e segmental boss 7 and the clip 9 is quickly sprung over the rib 3 with its middle part resting on the center of disk 8. After the contents of the jar have cooled somewhat, the clip 9 can be removed and if desired the covered jar may be inverted and caused to stand on the three bosses Ii, 5

' claim:-

- '1. In the cover of a jar having a vent 'throu%h the same, the combination of a segmenta boss on the upper side of said cover partly encompassing said vent, and a disk of suitable sealing material over said vent and within the confines of said boss.

2. 3.
