To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES C. HOYT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Display Devices, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like figures on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to a display device which, while it may be of general application, is intended more particularly in this embodiment thereof for the display of bolts, webs or rolls of cloth in wholesale woolen dry goods, or other lines of business necessitating the showing of heavy pieces of fabrics or other articles.

In order that the principles of the inven tion may be readily understood, I have disclosed a single type or embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a stand or table provided with a plurality of display devices; Fig. 2 is a plan view upon an enlarged scale of a portion of the stand or table shown in Fig. 1 and representing one of its series of display devices as uncovered to permit inspection of the goods; Fig. 3 is a vertical, longitudinal section as upon the line 33 of Fig. 4 and representing a plurality of display devices, and Fig. 4 is a vertical, central section taken through one of the rotary members of the display device.

Referring more particularly to that specific embodiment of my invention herein selected for illustration, the stand or table whereto my invention may be applied is represented at 1 in Fig. 1, it being of any suitable construction and material and adapted to receive one or a plurality of movable display devices, which in the present instance are rotatable.

It is apparent that if desired each display device with its casing or partial casing may be formed as a unit, and that from such units may be built up in any suitable manner any desired number of said devices. If desired, however, the display device may be non-inclosed and be mounted upon legs or otherwise instead of in a casing if the nature of the goods to be displayed be such that dust will not injure the same and may be so arranged that one face of the device is always open for inspection or observation of the goods.

For convenience of illustration, I have herein represented the stand or table as provided with front and rear walls 2 and 3 respectively, (see Fig. 4:) wherein are mount-ed a plurality of rotatable frames or barrels f in any suitable manner.

Referring more particularly to Figs. 3 and 4t, each frame or barrel 4 is provided with heads 5 whereto are suitably secured, as by screws 6, metallic members 7 provided with sockets 8 to receive pintles 9 removably secured, as by pins 10, in bushings 11 suitably secured to the front and rear walls of the stand, the bushing 11 mounted in the front wall 2 being formed with or attached to an enlarged member 11 received in a suitable opening in said wall.

In assembling the device, one end of the barrel may be positioned upon its pintle 9, after which the opposite bushing 11 carrying its pintle 9 may be placed in position with the pintle in its socket 8.

It is apparentthat the frame orbarrel may be provided with any suitable number of display faces, four being herein represented. While said faces may be adapted to receive for display material of any suitable type, I contemplate more particularly the display of heavy bolts or webs of cloth, in order that the texture or twill or other characteristics thereof may be readily examined without unnecessary handling or displacement of the goods. Heretofore it has been necessary to move the bolts from place to place during the examination thereof, entailing much inconvenience with unnecessary handling of the goods. It has heretofore been customary to place the bolts of cloth for inspect-ion side by side upon a counter. This, however, involves the use of a great deal of space, and unduly restricts the amount of goods that can be displayed.

Preferably I provide upon each face of the frame or barrel a rack or tray, such as indicated at 12 in Fig. 3, said trays being therein represented as overlapping to economize space. Any means appropriate to the character of the goods may be employed to secure them in position upon the respective faces of the f 'ames. Herein for the purpose I have represented most clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, straps consisting of members 18 and 14 provided with any suitable means for connecting their ends and permitting their ready disconnection. I-Ierein I have represented the strap member 14 as secured at one ios end to the frame and its other end as provided with one part 15 of a suitable buckle or other fastening device. The strap member 13 is provided with a cooperating buckle or other device 16 and at its opposite end is passed about a tongue 17 of a buckle secured to the adjacent wall of the rack or tray 12, the free end of such strap extending outwardly as represented at 18. The straps 13 and 14 may be readily disconnected at their meeting portions and if it be desired more tightly to secure the bolt of cloth in position, the free end 18 of the strap 13 is drawn upon. When such free end is released, the tongue of the buckle automatically engages therewith. I may provide any suitable goods-holding means.

Not infrequently the bolts of cloth are so wound or folded as to make it desirable to fold the same longitudinally before securing them in position upon the display device. Herein I have represented boards 19 adapted to be inserted between the portions of the bolt when thus folded. If desired, such boards may be attached to one of the straps. In Fig. 3, I have represented the straps 13 as passing through openings near the outer edges of such boards.

I preferably provide means to lock the dis play device with the proper bolt or other article in position to be inspected. Herein for the purpose and as shown more fully in Fig. 4, I have represented a spring actuated pin 20 suitably mounted in a socket formed in the enlarged portion 11*, the inner end of said pin being adapted to engage any one of a series of holes 21 provided in the adjacent metallic member 7. Preferably the pm 20 or inner end thereof and also the holes 21 are tapered, to take up wear of the parts.

Preferably I provide a drawer or other receptacle wherein a series of samples relating to each of the displayed bolts may be conveniently placed so as to be readily accessible when the corresponding bolt is in display position. Herein for the purpose I have represented, as shown most clearly in Fig. 4, drawers 22 mounted to slide in suitable ways in the frame or barrel 4 and held in place in any suitable manner, as by means of springs 23. Each drawer may be provided with a ring 24; flush with the front face thereof. To permit access to each drawer as the bolt to which it pertains is brought into display position, the adjacent wall 2 of the stand or table is provided with an opening 25 with which the drawer is brought into register.

lVhile the drawer may be used for any suitable purpose, I contemplate placing therein display cards having samples differentiated in color or weight or otherwise from but relating to the adjacent bolt. I may and preferably do, dispense with the drawers and provide a suitable number of pockets of compartments which may if desired be provided with a suitable closure.

Preferably I provide means to inclose or cover each display device or the individual bolts or other articles secured thereon.

lVhile I may employ a suitable number of covers mounted upon the display device and adapted to be drawn over the adjacent bolt, preferably I employ sliding covers noncontacting with the rotary frame or barrel. I have provided, as most clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3, cover members 26 and 27 sliding in suitable ways provided in the stand or table 1, said members having flexible portions permitting them to assume the position represented in Fig. 3.

Vhen it is desired to inspect one of the bolts, the cover is opened and the frame or barrel turned until the desired bolt is brought into the upper position indicated in Fig. 3, whereupon the pin 20 may be engaged with the proper opening 21, and the frame or barrel thereby locked in such position, with the drawer 22 pertaining thereto accessible as previously described.

It is obvious that the display device is of general. application and that upon the faces thereof I may secure tools, or samples of any desired line of goods.

It is highly important in exhibiting goods, as, for example, cotton and woolen fabrics, that they be displayed between the observer and the light. In this position, the color of woolen cloth or the twill of cotton cloth can be observed to best advantage. This can readily be accomplished by mounting the frame or barrel upon a substantially horizontal aXis, and therefore it is, in this type of the invention, of peculiar importance that the display device be arranged in substantially that position.

Not only is my display device of such character that the best position in which to show the goods to advantage is always insured, but the goods are readily accessible for inspection at a moments notice. They are kept free from dust and from fading, and in the case of fabrics, sample cuttings thereof are close at hand to the piece displayed. The device is of extreme durability, and while simple in construction is very effective for the purpose intended.

Having thus described one type or embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understood that although specific terms are employed, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.

1. A rotary display device comprising in combination a self-supporting stand or casing, a frame or barrel directly mounted for rotation in said stand or casing and housed thereby, said frame or barrel having a plu- Y rality of displaying faces for the reception of a bolt of cloth or the like, boards adapted to be applied to said bolts of cloth, and means for securing said bolts and boards in position upon said display faces.

2. A rotary display device comprising in combination an external selfsupporting stand or casing, a frame or barrel directly mounted for rotation in said stand or casing and housed thereby, said frame or barrel having a plurality of display faces for the reception of bolts of cloth or the like,boards adapted to be inserted between the folds of said bolts of cloth and straps engaging said boards and bolts and secured to said frame or barrel to position said bolts for inspec tion.

3. A display device comprising a frame or barrel mounted for rotary movement and provided with a plurality of faces whereto the goods to be displayed may be secured, and a receptacle in said frame or barrel adjacent one or more of said faces.

4-. A display device comprising a frame or barrel mounted upon a horizontal axis for rotary movement, and provided with a plurality of facts having racks or trays to receive the goods to be displayed, means to secure the goods in position, and one or more drawers mounted in said frame radially within said faces and adjacent one or more thereof.

5. A display device comprising a stand or table having a frame or barrel horizontally mounted for rotation in opposite walls thereof, and provided with a plurality of faces for the reception of the goods to be displayed, and one or more drawers mounted in said frame adjacent one or more of said faces, one of said walls having an opening into register with which said drawer or drawers may be brought.
