To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that CARL ORGAARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vheelock, county of illiams, and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Lamps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to lamps and more specifically to an improved wick adjusting means therefor; the present application being a division of my application, Serial No. 510,484, filed July 20th, 1909.

The object of this invention is the provision in a lamp of improved wiclcadjusting means which may be manipulated to readily and quickly raise or lower the wick, means which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in operation.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

With these objects in view my invention consists in an improvement in lamps characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,

Figure 1 is apartially sectional side elevation of a lantern equipped with my improved lamp in its preferred form, F 2 is a slightly enlarged central longitudinal section of the wick-holding and adjusting means embodied in my invention, Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section taken on substantially line a -a of Fig. 2, and Figs. 4 and 5 are details of parts included in the wick-adjusting means illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.

Referring now to the drawing 1 indicates the lantern casing, the detail description of which is found in the application above referred to, 2 indicating the lens arranged in the front side of said casing and 3 the reflector mounted upon the rear wall thereof. Mounted in the base 4 of the casing, the same being preferably threaded therein, is an oil lamp 5, the latter comprising a reservoir 6 and the tubular wick holder 7 8 indicating the wick slidable within the latter.

Slidably mounted in the holder 7 is a snugly fitting sleeve 9 which is adapted to encircle and to carry said wick. Provided in said sleeve is a transversely disposed, preferably rectangular, slot 10 adapted to receive the spike or pointed portion 11 of anormally curved member 12. In order to receive said spike portion and to permit of vertical adjustment thereof, the tube 7 is provided with an elongate longitudinally extending slot 13. The spike 11 is of such a shape that the same will be received in the slot 11 only when the shank 12 thereof is in horizontally disposed position, the same being, when the latter is turned to vertically extending position, locked in position in the sleeve 9 because of the edge 14E of the latter engaging a recess 15 provided at the base of said spike, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.

Removably secured upon the outer surface of the tube 7, by means of flanges 16 engaging the longitudinal edges thereof, is a longitudinally extending channel member 17, the channel of which, when the latter is arranged upon said tube being in registering position with the slot 13 of said tube. ith this provision, upon the wick being properly positioned in the sleeve 9, the spike 11 of the member 12 is inserted through the slot 10 and locked in position in said sleeve in a manner above described. The wick is thus locked in position in said sleeve. The member 16 is now positioned upon the tube 13 as before stated, in which event the shank 12' of the member 12 will rest in the channel thereof, said shank because of its resilient, normally curved condition forcibly engaging the upper edge of said member 17, as shown in Fig. 2. By providing the outer or contacting edge of said shankwith teeth, as shown, it is evident that the latter will engage said upper edge of said member, hence the sleeve 9 and consequently the wick 8 may be regulated as desired and will be locked because of such teeth in any position to which they may be adjusted.

\Vhile I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device I do not wish to be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in the details of construction and the arrangement of parts described without departing from the spirit of the invention comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. In a lamp, a reservoir, a tubular wick.

holder having a vertical slot therein, a sleeve slidable in said holder and having a horizont ally elongated opening in the side thereof registering with said slot, a spike shaped to be inserted through said opening but to interlock with said sleeve when turned to another position, a wick in said sleeve and an upwardly extending shank carryingsaid spike, substantially as described.

2. In a lamp, a reservoir, a tubular wick holder having a vertical slot therein, a sleeve slidable in said holder and having a horizontally elongated opening in the side thereof registering with said slot, a spike shaped to be inserted through said opening but to interlock with said sleeve when turned to another position, a wick in said sleeve, an upwardly extending shank carrying said spike, and a longitudinally extending channel member removably secured to said wick holder and encompassing said shank, substantially as described.

3. In a lamp, a reservoir, a tubular wick holder, means for adjusting the wick in said holder, said means comprising a sleeve encircling the wick and slidable in said holder, a pointed member passing through a slot in said sleeve and piercing said wick, means for locking said pointed member in said sleeve, and a resilient toothed shank projecting from said pointed member, said holder being slotted for the reception of said shank, a channel member arranged upon the outer surface of said holder, the channel in said member being engaged by said shank, the toothed side of said shank engaging the upper edge of said channeled member to hold said sleeve in adjusted position in said holder, substantially as described.
