Description
ELIAS n- NABHAN, or LAWRENCE. MASSACHUSETTS. I
' A. PICKER-STICK. v
To ull Awhom it may concern-Q' Y 'Be it known that I. Ennis H. NABHAN, a e citizen of the United States, residing at Lawrence, in the countyof Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picker-Sticks,
of which the following is a specification. f
My invention relates to the picker sticks of looms.
It `*comprises a. combination of `parts to replace the sweep strap and power strap now commonly used.y It is well known that on account of the continual blows which the picker stick gives to the shuttle caused by the action of the sweep stick and sweep arm on the pickel' stick, the wear on all the parts is very severe. All these parts wear .out and break very rapidly. This breakage. not-only causes increased expensebut re quires that the loom shouldbe stopped until repairs are made. VOn account of this severe hammering, ordinary frictional adjustments of the parts are not satisfactory as they are not permanent. It is also desirable that the wooden parts;especially the picker stick should be weakened asy little as possible by boring holes therein.
y `My invention comprises a combined sweep strap and power strap. y All the parts in which strength is desirable are made of metal, but where the sweep strap comes in showing the adjusting washer.
contact with the picker stick, ileather padding is used. v Y
ln the drawings, Figure 1 is a back view of my device. Fig. 2 is a sideview. Fig. 3 is a top View, part of the sweep strap bei-ng `broken away to show the` construction. Fig.
4 is a detail from the side of the sweepstrap Fig. 5 shows the sweep strap without the adjusting washer.
A represents a picker stick of the usual construction. f
B' represents the sweep stick through which the forward motion isy given to the picker stick The pickerk stick and sweep stick are of the usual construction.
The sweep strap C is made of a single strip 10 of metal bent in the form of a U and preferably made of spring steel. Near the endsv and `opposite each other are longi- -tudinal slots 11. Inside steel strip 10, and preferably glued thereto is a leather strip 12 which conforms to the inner shape of strip 10.` Leather strip 12 is pierced with slots which adjoin slots 11. Inside the loop Spebcation of Letters Patent.
Application lcdplarch 25, 1910.` Serial No. 551,467. Y Y.
terminates izian open book 4Q.' Vnear its bottom has a longitudinal slot 41 110 which consists of strips of leather 13 set edgewise, glued and closely packed together. This cushion 13 is also held together and inV place by a rivet 14 vwhich passes entirely through strips 10,712 and 13 as shown by. y A .the dotted lines inFig. 3.
p The sweep stick B near its endhas bolt, holev 16. Through slots l1 and thefhole 16,
I pass a bolt 20 by which the sweeprstrap C is attached tosweep stick B. A nut 21l .p on bolt 20 serves to hold the parts together.
If it is desired to use the sweep stick andv 7or- ,a f
sweep strap at their extreme length, the sweep strap is pulled out until bolt 20 passes Patented 00h74.', Y
of strips 10 andV 12, I provide a cushion.
through the extreme end of slots 11 as show-n .in F ig. 5.v Nut 21 is screwed up andthe parts are thus irnily held in place.
VForihe purpose of adjusting the parts,`
that is, of lengtheningl or shortening the sweep strap', l provide adjusting washers E. y These washers are somewhatlonger and n wider than slots'll and each Vhas ai elongated boss 30 which just tit-s inside of aV slot 11, and extends through both. steel strip vl0 and leather 12.' Through this washer ll and boss 30, at a little distance from the` l center, l bore a bolthole 3l of a size to permit the passage 'of the shank of bolt 20. Referring to Fig. 4, 1t will be readily seen that by pushing bossi) into `slot 11 in they K y position shown in Figs and-1, sweep strap (l will be shortened to sonic extent. If. it
`is desirable still further to kshorten it, the
2, whereby the sweep strap is still further shortened. It is evident that a number of Vwashers with holes in different positions maybe kept on handto allow any desired adjust-nient. At the back of the loop of sweep strap C, I Vrivet orv otherwise attachv Va strip of metal. 17 which passes Vup and back over cushion 13 and terminates 1n an n open hook 18.
ioo
To support sweep strap C, in place of a power strap. I use an adjustablesupporting member which consists of a strip of metal l". This strip Fis a litt-le narrower than the back of picker kstick A and at its bottom Strip F and near its topa longitudinal row of pin holes Through slot 41 passes a round Vheaded screw -13 .into the back of' picker stick A. At. a distance about equal to the length of slot l1 above. screw 43.1 drive a pin or headless screw il. A size tojiist' enter any one of holes 4t2. A link ll which is shown as provided with alu'o at each end, one .passed over iiook'ft() :inc the other passed over hook 1S, connects stripY l with. sweep strap C and supports sweep strap Cviipoii picker stick A.
lf it desired to change the position Vofy sweep strap C as for instance to raise it. it
is iiccessar)v only to slightly loosen screw lil enough to allow strip F to he pulled .out
. clear ot' pin 44 as shown by the dotted lines g of leather and a cushion of leather .inside the loop together with oppositely disposed slots near the ends of the loop. adpisting washers each of` which has a boss which enters a slot in the sweep strap and has a passage which is 'oil' the center of the boss,
together with a sweep stick through which is :i hole. bolts which pass through the pas4 sagesiii the washers and said sweep :stick hole. and means for positively*supporting and adjusting the, sweep strap on `the pickeiy stick as described.
.Iii a loom, the coiiibiliation of a picker stick. with a sweep strapwhich comprises a lThis pin il isiof a i U shaped ip'oi spring ksteel with aliiiiiig of leather and a. cushion of leather inside tlierloop together with oppositely disposed slots near the ends of the loop and a hook at the top, vadjusting washers each of which has a boss which enters a slot in the sweep strap and has a passage which' is 0E the4 center of the boss, together with a sweep stick through-which is a hole, bolt-s which passthrongh the passages iii the washers:
and said sweep strick hole, a metallic snpporting` stripv which.terminates at the hot- `toni in a hook and has a longitudinal slot `a-t thehottoiiiaiid a plurality of pin holes' at the top, with a screw which passes through the slot and iiitoithe picker stick, a pinv in the picker stick which enters a pin hole,
and a metallic link which connects the suppoi-tinge, v'strip hookwith the sweep strap hook. Y i
8. ln a loom. the combination of a picker stick. with a sweep st ap which comprises a U shaped strip of spring steel having oppositeliv disposed slots near the ends, ad-
justing washers each of which has af bossv which enters a slot iii the sweep strap'aiid has a passagewliich is ottl the center of the `boss.- together with a sweep stick through which is a hole, and a bolt which passes sweep stick hole.
in testimony whereof l, hereto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
