Description
SIR. BMLEYF Sleigh." No. 97,150 A Q Patented Nov 23-, 1869-.
- tllui tmi swa 4 Letters Patent N 97,150, dated November 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLEIGHS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part 01 the same.
To all to whom these presents shall come Be it'known that I, S. R. BAILEY, of Bath, in the county of Sagadahoc, and State of Maine, have made an invention of a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Sleighs; and do hereby declare the following to be, a full, clear, and exact description thereof, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part 'of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, and
Figure 2, a transverse section of a sleigh-body containing my invention.
The invention herein described, though it may ap.- pear at first sight trifling, is, in reality, one of importance, in the manufacture of line and expensive sleighs, since elegance of form and finish is a great desider atum in such vehicles, and any device which contributes to this end becomes of value.
The object sought, in making this invention, is to add to the finished appearance of a sleigh by hiding, by means of the sides of the body, the jointnow visible between the lower edges of such sides and the side and back rails of the floor, such joint, as well as rails, being dis-agreeably prominent in sleighs now manufactured.
It-is becoming the general custom to omit, from the upper part of the cross-bars, the outside fender or guard heretofore almost universally adopted in the production of all classes of sleighs, and the removal of this guard exposes, to a much greater degree, the
joint betbre alluded to.
i I accomplish my object by prolonging the bottom of the sides of the sleigh-body to such an extent as to overlap and cover the joint heretofore existing between-it and the side and back rails of the floor, as well as to cover the rail itself.- 4
The drawings, which accompany this specification, and illustrate my invention, represent the sides of the sleigh-body at a a, and the outer side rails of the floor at b b, the runner cross-bars being shown at d d d, 800., the bottom boards at e e e,.and the rear floor rail at f, dotted lines.
' As before promised, the sides a a are prolonged, and made to overlap the rails b j, and consequently, the joint between them and the bottom.
Thelower outer edge of the sides may be worked into a mouldingor bead,in order to heighten the ornamental appearanee of the vehicle.
The obscuring of the said rail and joint m2 y be effeet-ed by advancing the lower edge of the side a upon a level with the upper face of the rail 1), and by cut-' ting awayor reducing the lower portion of the outer side of the rail, as shown in fig. 3 of the drawings, which is a section of the side and rail of a sleigh.
Claim.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Elongating the sides of the sleigh-body, so as to cover the bottom, side, and rear rails, to which the runner cross-bars are affixe-d, substantially as herein shown and described.
S. R. BAILEY.
Witnesses FRED. CURTIS, E. GRIFFITH.
