Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept.' 27; j 91 Application filed March 27, '1908. Serial No. 423,691,
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. TANNERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Top-Spinning Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for spinning tops of that character consisting of a cord on which is freely movable a button or Winder for permitting the cord to be readily Wound on the top at the required tension and at great speed Without the fingers becoming sore by the passage of the cord overv the iinsection of the Winder.
button serving as a handle used in the winding o the cord and as a grip while throwing the top in thespinning operation,` n
lVith these objects in view and others, as
Will appear as the description proceeds, the
invention comprises the various novel features of construction--and arrangement vof parts which will be inoie fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in theelaiin appended hereto. l
ln the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one of the embodiments of the invention, Figure l is perspective view of the device. 4Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal Fig; 3 is a. detail view showing the manner of using the device.
Similar reference characters are employed' to designate correspondingparts -m the views.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the cord of suitable length and gage, the ends being tied into knots 2 lor pern'ia'nei'itly retaining the button or Winder A on the cord'.A This button is made of wood or other suit# able material and is preferably an elongated body of about two incheslong and one-half inch in diameter with the ends tapered so that it can he conveniently gripped vas ahandle. lflxtending through the Winder A from one eid -to'itlieother is a zigzag passage consisting of a transverse portion 3.adj acent the center thereof and extendingi entirely through the same are inclined portions 4 extending from the ends of the pmti 3 to the extremities of the Winderfth re ein openings 5 where the portions 3 and l o the passageconnect and terminal openings G at the cndsof the Winder. These `openings,
y permit of the ready threading of the cord through thewinder, and by making the ,passage in the torni described, theeord passes over relatively sharp angles or corners 7 S0 as to retard the free movement of the cord through the Winder for the purpose of enabling the top to be wound with the required tension.
In using the spinning device, the w-inder` ik is moved along Vthe cord to a ioint adjacent one of the knots and the cord is a plied `to the top' in the usual manner Whi e one hand holds the Winder 'asra handle, and the other hand` holdsrthe top with the hend ot the cord" inproperposi-tion. i The hand holding the Winder is thenkgiven a rotary movement around the top so that-,the cordA- vcan be laid thereoirin `the usual manner, the
cord passing through the winder as the latter is carried aroundithe top. Theil the cord is fully wound, the Winder is held in the palm ot the throwing hand by the last three lingers While the thumb and first in-- ger hold the top'inthe usual manner for the tlirowihg thereof.l With a 'top spinning device ot' this character, the fingers do not' become sore as is usually the result and the cord can be ,wound on' the top with uniform tension and very quickly. Having thus described the invention, what l claim is A top spinning appliance comprising-.an elongated body tapered at its ends and pro- "vided"ataecentrajpoint with a transverse opening, and at opposit'ends with longitudinally inclined lipe'nings which communicate at their inner ends with the respective Avopposite ends of the transverse opening, the i' outer Vends Yo-E nthedongitudnially inglined openings extending centrally through the extremities of the' body, and' the inner ends of said longitudnaly inclined openings ex` tending through the sides of the body near the transverse opening, and e cord passed through the openings of the body and held friotionally therein, und provided with stops at its ends.
