To all whom it may concern:
lie it known that l, JOHN J. Li'Ncu, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shipping and Display Boxes for Food Products, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others Skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to boxes or receptacles such as are used by manufacturers of crackers, wafers, fancy cakes, and similar articles for shipping their products to retail merchants.
The main object of my invention is to provide a receptacle or box of the character described which can be used by a retail merchant for displaying` food products in a convenient manner.
Another object is to provide a shipping box or receptacle having a movable standard or leg which can be used for holding the box in an inclined position, thereby enabling a retail merchant to display his goods in the same box in which they are shipped from the manufacturer. And still anotherI object of my invention is to provide a shipping box of the character above described that is equipped with a plurality of standards of different length, means for locking Said standards in an inoperative position, and means for preventing said standards from contacting with the support on which the box rests when said standards are folded or arranged in an inoperative position.

Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A designates a box that is adapted to be used by a manufacturer of crackers, wafers, and similar food products, for shipping such articles to retail merchants. The box is preferably made of tin or some othei` suitablel sheet metal and is provided at its lower end with a flange l that extends downwardly below the bottom 2 of the box. The lid or cover 3 of the box is preferably of the tele- Serial No. 532,805.
scope type, and a piece of glass or other suitable transparent material 4t is set into said cover so as to enable the contents of the box to be seen.
A standard 5 is hinged or pivotally connected to the bottom of the box for maintaining the box in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 3, and thus displaying the contents thereof better than if the box was arranged in a level or perfectly horizontal position. Then the standard 5 is not in use it is folded inwardly against the bottom of the box, and as the flange l projects downwardly some distance below the bottom Of t-he box the standard does not contact with the support on which the box rests, the standard being locked in an inoperative position by means of a button or catch 6 that is pivotally connected to the bottom of the box, as shown in Fig. l. The box is preferably provided with a shorter standard 5 than can be used when it is desired to` arrange the box at a different angle, and when one of said standards is in use the other standard is held locked against the bottom of the box by means of the catch 6. Both standards are approximately U-shaped and they are connected to the bottom of the box in such a manner that the cross-piece of one standard laps over the lower end of the other standard when both standardsl are folded inwardly, thereby enabling both standards to be locked in an inoperative position by means of a single button or fastening device.
A box of the construction above described enables a retail merchant to display his goods in a convenient manner in the same box they are shipped in by the manufacturer. The box can be arranged at a plurality of different angles by usingl one or the other of the standards, and when one standard is in use the other is locked in an inoperative position by the fastening device G. The flange l on the bottom of the box prevents the standards from contacting with the support on which the box rests when the standards are folded so that a plurality of boxes can be piled evenly one upon the other, and as the standards are made of wire or light-weight metal rods the entire box can be made at only a trifle higher cost than the boxes which have heretofore been in general useA AWhile l have herein shown a box pro- CII vided with a telescoped lid or cover, I do not wish it to be understood that my invention is limited to such a construction for, if de sired, the box can be provided with a hinged lid.
Having` thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device for the purpose described, consisting` of a sheet metal box provided with a flange that projects downwardly below the bottom ofl the box, a plurality of standards pivotally connected to the bottom of the box and adapted to be folded against the bottom of the box inside of said fiange one of said standards being,r so formed that it laps over the other standard when in its folded position, and a single fastening device on the bottom of the box that engages the top standard and thus locks both standards in an inoperative position.
2. A device for the purpose described,
consisting of a rectangularshaped sheet metal box provided at its vlower end with a flange that projects downwardly below the bottom of the box, a plurality of U-shaped standards of different length pivotally connected to the bottom of the box and adapted to be folded against the bottom of the box inside of said flange, the cross-piece of' one of said standards lapping over the lower end of the other standard when they are folded, and a device on the bottom of the box that is adapted to engage the cross-piece of one of said standards and thus lock both standards in an inoperative position.
