Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACOB Gonnx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Desk-Pads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to the corner pieces or clasps of desk pads, and more particularly to the fastening of such corner pieces or clasps to the body of the pad.

The objects of the invention are to enable the corner pieces of a desk pad to be reotherwise re-finished in any way desired,

without injury to the rest of the pad; to provide a simple effective construction, and to obtain other advantages and results as may be brought out in the following description.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a plan of a desk pad of my improved construction; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3 shows one of my im roved corner pieces removed from the b0 y of the pad, in perspective; Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of one corner of the body portion of the pad, showing the sockets therein for receiving the corner piece; Fig. 5 is a detail section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a corner piece of slightly modified construction, turned upside down or inverted.

In said drawings, 10 indicates the body portion of a desk pad, said body portion being made in any ordinary manner of heavy cardboard or the like and covered with leather, paper or other material commonly used for that purpose. On top of said body portion is laid the usual blotter or blotters 11, the corners of said blotter being retained in the corner pieces 12. It is to said corner pieces 12 and the manner of attaching them to the body portion 10, that my invention particularly relates. Each corner piece has an outer vertical wall 13 bent at right angles and adapted to be disposed in alinement with the edges of a corner of the body 10 of the desk pad. From the upper edges of said vertical wall 13 an upper flange 14 extends horizontally inward over the desk pad, and from the lower edges of said wall 13 a lower flange 15 extends horizontally inward. Between the said flanges 14. and 15 a corner of the blotter or blotters 11 is adapted to lie, as most clearly shown in Fig. 5. In many cases the outer wall 13 and upper flange 14: are stamped in one integral piece, and afterward united to the lower flange 15 by soldering or the like, as

shown at 16 in Figs. 3 and 5. This is im material to my invention, however, and the exact shape or extent of the said flanges is also immaterial. In the drawing I have shown the flanges as quite narrow and substantially parallel at their inner edges to the outer wall 13, and it is of advantage in carrying out my invention to have the lower flange of such shape, as will hereinafter appear. The lower flange 15 sets flat upon the top of the body portion 10, and at the inner edge of said flange 15 I provide downwardly turned feet or extensions 17 which are adapted to enter sockets or slits 18 provided for them in the body portion 10. These feet 17 are preferably integral with the lower flange '15, and are somewhat shorter than the thickness of the body portion 10, so as to not reach therethrough. Each foot or extension 17 is apertured, as at 19, and the body portion 10 is perforated from its edge inward in alinement with the said apertures 19, as at 20.. Thus when the feet 17 of a corner piece are seated in their sockets 18, pins 21 having ornamental heads 22 are inserted through said perforations 20 and apertures 19, whereby the corner pieces are firmly secured to the body portion. At the same time the said pins 21 can be removed when desired, and the corner piece thus detached from the body portion. This enables the corner pieces to be taken off for re-finishing or the like, and by making all corner pieces with their feet 17 at standard distances apart, and the sockets 18 just the same in all desk pad body portions, obviously all corner pieces would be interchangeable with respect to all body portions. This enables the taste of a purchaser to be much more exactly suited, and obviates the necessity for the dealer carrying in stock such a large number of different desk pads.

The horizontal portion of the tongue 26 of the corner piece thus constitute its lower flange to rest upon the body portion of the desk pad and carry the feet 171 to enter sockets in said body por tion. In other words, all of the under flange 15 shown in Fig. 3, except what is necessary to carry the feet 17, has been cut away to form the construction shownin'Fig. 6.

The word pins is used herein to designate not only the precise form of pin shown in the drawing, but to cover broadly any memher which can be inserted through the edge of the body portion to engage the foot of the body portion, whether a nail rounded or of other cross section, a screw or other means. Furthermore while I have shown the feet of the body portion as apertured to receive said pins, they could obviously be recessed -.or formed to engage with the pins, and throughout the specification I do not wish to be understood as restricted by the face adjacent to one of its corners and perforations extending from its edge lnwa'rd and intersecting said sockets, a cornerpiece seated on said body portion, feet projecting from said corner-piece into said sockets,and pins in said perforations engaging said feet.

3. In a desk pad, the combination of a body portion having sockets adjacent to one of its corners, a corner-piece having a lower flange seated on said body portion, feet projecting from said flange into said sockets,

and means for releasably holding said feet in said sockets. v

4. In a desk pad, the combination of a body portion having sockets adjacent to one of its corners and perforations extending lnwardly from its edge and intersecting said sockets, a corner-piece having a lower flange seated on said body portion, feet projecting fromsald flange into said sockets, and pins 111 sald perforatlons engaging said feet.
