NATHAN GLOUGH, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS,
Letters Patent No. 97 ,049, dated November 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BUTTER-CUTTER AND STAMP.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pazt of the same.
. a Butter-Cutter and Stamp Combined; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full and exact description thereof', reference. being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon butter-cutter and stampV combined, whereby butter .may he cut and punched in any form, size, and shape of cakes, at the same time stamped with any design desired, at one operation.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed lto describe its construction and operation.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved butter-cutter and stamp combined.
Figure 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same, showing its construction and operation.
I construct my improved butter-cutter and stamp with a suitable stock, a, which is formed of the. required size and shape, on one end of which a shoulder is made, l'or the reception of the cutter b, which is formed of tiuor other metal, having its sides, both interior and exterior, parallel from top to bottom, so that it will enter the butter, and also allow the cakes of butter to be easil driven from it. To accomplish this, the metal is ol'unilorm or nearly uniform thickness, and quite thin, its shape, size, and form corresponding with the end of the stock a, and is firmly secured to the same by means of screws.
lhrongh the centre of this stock (l, a hole is made, for the reception of the piston c, on one end of' which is secured the head or stamp al, its form, size, and shape, corresponding with the cutter b, it being enough smaller that it will operate in the cutter 11. On this head or stamp (l is' formed or carved any design or ligure desired.
Attached to the other end of this piston cis the knob e, which is so constructed and arranged that it may be removed at any time, in order to aid and facilitate the cleaning of the cutter b and stamp d.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a My improved butter-cutter and stamp being thus constructed, and its several parts adjusted in position, is then ready for use.
The operator places the cutter b on the butter to be rut. He then forces the same into the butter, by aid ot' the stock a, until the same comes in contact with the head or stamp (l. He then forces the head or stamp d on to the same, by aid of the knob e and piston c, which gives the impression on the same as required, corresponding wit-h the design or figure on the head or 'stamp (l. The instrumentis then removed, c taking with it the cake of butter.' Then, by aid of the piston o and knob e, this stamped cake of butter is removed from the cutter b, and deposited on aplate with the stamped side uppermost.
I do not confine myself to any particular size, form, or shape of cakes to be produced, as they may be o any thickness desired, by having the cutter b lengthened or shortened, and they may be of any size or shape, as the user desires, by altering the size and shape of the cutter b, and any design stamped on the same, as may be desired by the operator.
Thus, it will be seen, with the use of my improved butter-cutter and stamp, butter can be cut in any form, size, and shaped cakes, and at the same time stamped with any ligure or design desired at one operation, without usinga knife, crumbling the same, or touching the same with the hands in the least, thus furnishing butter for the table use iu neatand perfect cakes, of any size and shape., and design stamped on the same` at a moments notice, being cheap, durable, and useful.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to Asecure by Letters Patent, is-
A combined butter-cutter and stamp, composed of the metallic cutter b, with parallel interior and exterior sides secured to the pertbrated stock a, in colnbination with the piston c and stampcl, substantially as and for the .purpose herein speciiied.
` NATHAN OLOUGH.
