W. H. WHIGHAM.
BIT BRAOB.
APPLICATION mam mm. as, 1910.
Patented Sept. 13,1910
INVENTOR W. H.WH ie H A M Nmowne ys WILLIAM H. WHIGHAM, OF CALIFORNIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BIT-BRACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 13, 1910.
Original application filed February 7, 1910, Serial No. 542,638. Divided and this application filed March 28, 1910. Serial No. 552,061.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM H. Wme- HAM, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at California, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bit-Braces, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to bit braces and the object thereof is to provide a bit brace in the manner as hereinafter set forth which is particularly adapted for use in connection with the form of angle guide attachment as disclosed in my co-pending application, Serial No. 542,638, filed Feb. 7, 1910, and of which this application is a division.
Although the bit brace forming the subject-matter of this application is designed for use in connection with the form of angle guide attachment referred to, yet it is to be understood that the bit brace can be used for any purposes and in connection with any angle guide attachment wherein the bit brace is found applicable.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bit brace in the manner as herein after set forth whereby an angle guide attachment can be" connected thereto when boring horizontally upwardly, downwardly or in any an le.
Further o jects of the invention are to provide a bit brace in the manner as hereinafter referred to and for the purpose set forth and which shall be simple in its construction, strong, durable, efficient in its use, allowing for the convenient connecting therewith of the angle *uide attachment, and inexpensive to manufacture.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown one embodiment of the lnvention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throu hout the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation of a bit brace in accordance with this invention showing the adaptation therewith of angle guide attachment and the bit in position for boring downwardly at an angle, Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the bit brace in position for boring upwardly at an angle and with the angle guide attachment connected thereto, Fig. 3 "is a sectional detail broken away of one end of the brace, and Fig. 41 is a like view of the other end of the brace.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing the bit as well as the brace is shown disposed at an angle for boring downwardly at an angle as indicated by the broken line a with respect to tlzhe pberpendicular, as indicated by the broken In Fig. 2 of the drawing the brace and bit are shown disposed at an angle for boring upwardly at an angle, as indicated by the broken line 0 with respect to the perpendiciu lar, as indicated by the broken line (Z.
The angle guide attachment is referred to generally by the reference character A and embodies a base B formed with a screwthreaded stem (1.
A bit brace in accordance with this invention comprises a yoke shaped brace having the free terminus of its arm 5 offset, as at 6 and the free terminus of its arm 7 offset, as at 8. The brace 41 is provided with a hand grip 9. The offset portion 6 of the arm 5 has connected to the outer face at its free end a grip or rest 10 and the offset portion 8 of the arm 7 has connected to and projecting from a chuck 11 provided with a bit 12. The offset portion 6 has formed in its inner face at the free end thereof a threaded socket 13 and the offset portion 8 has its inner face at its free end provided with a screw threaded socket 14. The socket 13 opposes the socket 14 and each of said sockets has the axis thereof in alinement with the axis of the bit 12.
When boring downwardly or horizontally, the angle guide attachment is coupled to the inner face of the offset portion 8 by the engagement of the threaded stem C with the threaded wall of the socket 14 and when boring upwardly the angle guide attachment is secured to the inner face of the offset portion 6 by the engagement of the threaded stem C with the threaded wall of the socket 13.
"The ofisettingof the free endsof the arms 5, 7 is had to prevent the operators hand. engaging the attachment in using the brace.
That I claim is A bit brace having the free ends of each of its arms ofiset outwardly, said offset portions being oppositely disposed with respect I to each other and each having its inner face at its outer end provided with a screwthreaded socket, an angle guide attachment, coupled to the brace by one of said threaded sockets, said socketsopposing each other and the axis of each of the sockets being in alinement with each other and with the axis of the bit coupled with the brace.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FRED M. WHIGHAM, ALBERT D. COATSWORTH.
