OSCAR HAMPTON PEEPLES,
OF KINCAID, MISSISSIPPI.
PLOW.
Be it known that I, OSCAR HAMPTON PEEPLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kincaid, in the county of Grenada and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs.
This invention relates to improvements in plows, and more particularly to the construction of the beam and the construction and adjustment of the standard or foot.
The object of the invention is to provide an implement of this character with an improved metallic beam and standard of such construction that it may be produced at a small cost and the standard may be quickly and easily adjusted at any angle with respect to the beam.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved plow, the plowshare or shovel being indicated in dotted line and a colter being arranged on the beam. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the standard and the handles applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the beam.
The beam of my improved plow consists of two metal bars 1 arranged parallel with each other and having their front ends united and spaced apart by a clevis plate 2, the rectangular rear end of which is secured between the bars 1 by transverse fastenings 3, and the projecting front end of which is enlarged to form a vertically extending head 4 having a series of openings to receive a draft connection. The rear ends of the bars 1 of the beam are formed with oppositely disposed, laterally offset, portions 5 which receive between them spaced parallel bars 6forming the plow standard. The boveled lower ends of the bars 6 are united by a spacing block 7, and their upper and intermediate portions are united and spaced apart by a segmental-shaped locking plate 8 which projects forwardly from the standard and is adapted to swing between the space bars 1 of the beam. These bars 1 have their ofiset rear portions connected to the standard bars 6 by a transverse pivot pin or Specification of Letters Patent.

bolt 9, whereby the standard is adapted to swing in a vertical plane so that it may be disposed at any angle with respect to the beam. To retain the standard in adjusted angular position, the segmental member 8 has its curved portion formed with openings 10 arranged in a series concentric with the pivot 9, and any one of which may be brought into register with alining transverse openings 11 in the beam bars 1 for the reception of a removable locking pin or bolt 12. The lower end of the segmental member 8 is secured between the bars 6 of the standard by a transverse fastening 13, and the upper end of said member 8 is secured by a transverse fastening bolt or rod 1 1 which also serves to unite to the upper end of the standard the intermediate portions of tw'o handle bars 15. These handle bars are preferably constructed of wood and have their lower ends arranged in downwardly converging relation and secured to the side faces of the standard bars 6 by a transverse bolt or fastening 1(3. The upper diverging portions of the handle bars 15 are united by a. cross bar 17, and their extremities are shaped to provide the usual hand pieces 18. Spacin sleeves 19 are arranged on the bolt or rod 14 between the handle bars and the standard bars, whereby the parts 8, 6, 15, will be rigidly united.
A plowshare, cultivator shovel or any other earth-working device may be applied to the lower end of the standard by any suitable means.
In the drawings I have illustrated a colter knife 19 depending from the intermediate portion of the beam and having its rectangular upper end or shank arranged between the bars 1 and secured by a clamp consisting of two side plates 20 engaged with the outer side faces of the bars 1 and connected by transverse bolts 21 arranged above and be low the bars 1, the colter shank being arranged betwcen the bolts 21 as shown.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention provides an exceedingly simple and practical metallic plow-stock which may be produced at a comparatively small cost, will be strong and durable, may be readily adjusted to permit the standardor foot to be adjusted at any desired angle with respect to the beam.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed is:
The combination of a beam composed of spaced bars united at their forward ends and having theirrear ends laterally off-set, the off-set ends at intermediate portions of said bars being formed with transverse a1ining openings, a standard composed of spaced bars united at their lower ends, a segmental shaped bar having its ends arranged between the upper and intermediate portions of the bars of the standard and having its central portion formed with an arcuate series of openings adapted to register with the transversely alining openings in the intermediate portion of the bars of the beam, a pivot passed through the openings in the oif-set rear ends of the bars of the beam and through the bars of the standard at a point concentric with said segmental bar, whereby the standard is pivotally mounted, a pin removably arranged in the transversely alining openings in the intermediate portions of the bars of the beam, and in one of said openings in the central portion of said segmental bar to lock the standard in adjusted position, connected handle bars arranged in downwardly and forwardly converging relation and having their lower ends secured to the opposite sides of the standard, a fastening rod passed through the bars and the upper end of the segmental bar and spacing sleeves arranged on said fastening rod between the inner face of the handle bars and the outer faces of the standard bars.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses. OSCAR HAMPTON PEEPLES. Witnesses:
LOUIS B. YEAGER, WHITFIELD KING.
