DAVID D. OGILVIE, 0F LEE, NEVADA.
T o all whom it may concern:
|Be it known that I, DAVID D. OGrLvrE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lee, in the county of Elko and State of Nevada, have invented a new and Improved Guard, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to guards as are employed in certain classes of farming inachinery, such, for example, as mowers, reapers, headers, etc., and has for its object to provide a guard construction in which the ledger plates are easily removed and assembled with the guard fingers, and, when in operative position, are firmly held.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. y
Figure 1 is a section on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2, showing a guard constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan of the guard; Fig. 3 is an inverted plan -of one of the guard plates; Fig. 4t is a rear edge view of the same; and Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 ot' Fig. 2 with the ledger plate removed.
For convenience of illustration I have shown the guard fingers 5, as constructed in accordance with my invention, applied to the usual finger-bar 6, to which each is secured by a bolt 7, which also secures the guide-plate 8 and the guide-clip 9 arranged at the top of the bar. The intermediate portion of each guard finger is constructed with a flat horizontal seat 10 for a ledgerplate 11, the latter having a lug 12 secured to its under side adjacent to the rear edge of the plate, preferably dove-tailed and received in a corresponding way formed on the longitudinal center of the finger below the seat 10, the said way leading into a recess 13 of the finger, having a pocket 13a provided with a downwardly and outwardlyinclined or curved wall with which the reduced outer end 15 of the ledger-plate 11 engages. The ledger-plate is made relatively wider than is customary, and when it is in operative position it is engaged at opposite sides adjacent to its rear edge by upwardlyextending lugs or projections 16, rigidly formed on the guard finger, the lugs of adjacent fingers abutting, as shown in Fig. 2, when the several fingers are assembled on the finger-bar.

The ledger-plate is provided with an aperture 14 which extends into the lug 12 and serves as means for engaging a special tool, as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 1, for driving the plate up to place and removing it from the finger. lVhen the plate is as- Isembled with the guard finger', it is held in place not only by the lug 12 but also by the projections 1G and the reduced end or projection 15, the latter by reason of its particular engagement with the 'wall of the pocket 13, tending to force the forward portion of the plate downwardly and bind it to its seat, as also bind the lug 12 in the dovetailed way. Each finger 1s provided with the usual rearwardly-extended guard 17 of tapering form, overhanging the ledger-plate, and has smooth side edges.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new'and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination of a guard finger having a pocket at its forward end provided with a downwardly and outwardly-inclined wall, and a ledger-plate seated on and slidably engaged with the guard finger', with the end of the plate passing into and engaging the said downwardly and ontwardly-inehned wall, forcing the plate to its seat.
2. The combination of a guard finger having upwardly-extending lugs and provided with a pocket arranged in advance of said lugs, said guard finger having a way, and a ledger-plate seating on the finger and engaged at opposite sides adjacent to its rear edge by said lugs and having a lug secured to its under side slidably received in the way of the finger, with the forward end of the plate engaging the wall of the said pocket, forcing the plate to its seat.
3. The combination of a guard finger', and a ledger plate removably seated on the finger, the forward end portion of the plate engaging with a portion of the finger, with the said engaging portions arranged and constructed to cause the plate to be depressed to its seat when the said plate is forced forwardly.
